I just got five days off work starting tomorrow, so i'm going to jump on the trail. I need to continue NOBO from Greylock in MA, So I'm curious what the trail traffic is like in vt. I'd rather not...
I'm not an ultralight expert, but I think this doesn't look too bad as a safe pack. Some things I think you could certainly do without:
Both a beanie and two bandanas. I would ditch the beanie...
Five-Leaf! HI! Sorry I never got back to your post. I had to return a few days early due to a change in my workplace (new boss), and deal with that. (Which you know something about)
How was the...
I know that it's a month and a half away, but if the weather in mid Febrarury is anyhting like now, you need to be able to accomodate changing weather. The day before christmas I hiked from Gooch...
Glad to hear my math did work out...too bad i'll have to be snacking on half a bottle of pills a day, though...at least my lunches are plannes out now...
:p
Hey...I was only 44,800 micrograms off. That's pretty close in the wolrd of, um.... BIG things. :p
Good thing my job doesn't require any math to ensure life safety.
Sgt Rock, if you want to...
From the website posted above: "The key to good thyroid function is adequate, but not excessive iodine intake. Intakes in the range 100-300 micrograms per day are desirable, though intakes up to 500...
Like Hog on Ice, I use cheese and sausage, but I put it between a bagel. I make it before leaving camp, and keep in my jacket, so it doesn't freeze. I can pull it out, and keep on hiking if I want...
Is relying on iodine tablets for a month in winter going to be detrimental to my health? What's a safe length for Iodine use?
Do it after college. Not doing it between HS and college was a HUGE, HUGE mistake for me. I don't know your situation, but i'm in a program that doesn't allow any time off at all, and i'll have major...
I had thought that I responding to another thread "another analyze gear list thread" which was posted by an inexperienced hiker looking for advice on winter camping. I just confused you, but looked...
Sorry....wrong thread altogether. I promise to look next time.
As i'm sure you know, you live just outside Bear Mountain state park. This might be a good place to start. The park is gorgeous, the campsites (12 in the whole park) are remote and little used, and...
The list looks decent, Namehere. I'm starting at Springer in a few days, and will be in the smokies myself in January. First, I recommend that your balaclava have a nose cover if it doesn't already....
Mr. Happy..are you startinf at Springer, or in TN? If TN, where? I'll be in that area then, and it's always nice to know others out there.
Last group of Scouts I met had three leaders, and none of them knew that you had to purify stream water. Upon hearing this, one of them guessed that it'd be okay if they boiled it for 10 or 15...
No boyscouts in the winter. (maybe)
Note: I was a boyscout. It was wonderful. Boyscouts bring young men into the wilderness, and that's great.....but they're REALLY noisy/messy/dangerous.
That would make sense. If they do have all three cones like humans, they'd also have rods, which are least sensitive to red out of all colors at night (when the rods are fully funtioning).
Will this have any effects on those trying to hike the park?
I meant to say that rods take over in low light, not cones, but who cares anyways?
But, back from Deer.....short answer (after many posts) is that Blue will be much more visible, due to the sensitivity of your cones to that wavelength, but Red will cause less ruin of nightvision...
You're absolutely right. While I know a few things about light, I only know what exoerts tell me about deer. There was part of one of those articles that said that deer only "detect" green and Blue,...
If you do hike SNP, and want whatever solitude you can find, saty with the northern region. WHile it's a further drive, the northern section crosses the skyline drive many less times (if my memory...
Did each of those three storms drop 12+" individually, or all together? How long was the trail impassable? I know that it varies hugely from year to year, and region to region, but should I get big...
