The combo I use is a GoLite Bitterroot(13oz) down jacket and Marmot Aegis(13oz) rain jacket.
You could shave weight with a Marmot Mica(7oz) or save $60 by using a Marmot PreCip(13oz).
I looked...
I prefer a remote canister stove for a few reasons:
1) Can invert the canister and it will burn liquid fuel which is great for cold weather or getting the last bit out of those half empty hiker...
Kristal, I have a copper spur UL1 that I just used for a week in north GA and it is a great tent. Sets up fast, great ventilation, lightweight, plenty of room for a 1 person, etc... Really can't see...
I don't have experience with the Obi or Velocity but I do own the Copper Spur and I don't think the door being hinged at the bottom is a big deal at all really... you get used to it very quickly....
I will be starting the approach trail the 11th and heading out from around springer the next day. See you out there!
UPDATE: Starting on the approach trail April 11th.
I traveled with someone last year who used the Fly Creek UL1 which uses the same floor material and she never had any issues with leakage or durability. We pitched on some fairly rocky surfaces and...
I started my VA section last year with a well worn pair of the TrekSport model. They had good cleating and tread when I started but it was becoming smooth when I finished. I did not really miss the...
Says you...
If five fingers work for you I would stick with them. The start of a long distance hike isn't the time to change things up. Have you looked at the new Spyridon LS model of VFFs? They are made...
All those are good tents, though maybe not suited to your purpose...
The Seedhouse is well built, and lightweight but the floor is thin and may not handle dog nails well if he decides to step in....
I'm going to be starting the first week of April, driving up with my girlfriend when she can get 2 days off. Nice to know so many WB members will be starting around the same time. See you all out...
Trail Name: To Be Determined
Direction: NOBO
Estimated Start Date: First week of April
Approach Trail: YES!
I hiked the VA section last year in my TrekSport's and loved them. Light, agile, dry fast, the list goes on. I will be using the new Spyridon LS model on my thru this year.
The only downside is...
The ATC has already provided us with this definition. From their website:
"A thru-hiker is a hiker or backpacker who has completed or is attempting to walk the entire Appalachian Trail in one...
Lots of people carry the hubba hubba from what I have seen. If it makes you more comfy to have your gear with you that is probably the better choice.
Congrats on your new stove, I am sure you will love it. I won't be starting my thru until April so I probably won't see you out there, but good luck on your thru hike!
As others have said I have not run into any rain suit that is truly breathable.
I would suggest looking into the Packa. It is lightweight @ 13oz considering it doubles as your rain jacket & pack...
I would personally go with the weekend set. Mostly because I like a 1 liter pot but the heat exchanger on the bottom will also make it more efficient.
Yeah, that's what I was looking for thanks.
I know there was a thread on this about a year ago but I can not seem to find it anywhere so I will ask again.
Is there any concerns or drawbacks to putting your tent in a stuff sack and...
Not sure what its used for but there certainly isn't anything wrong with the regular crux.
I would do an entire thru-hike. Why... get conditioned once, see multiple seasons in a single hike, to say you did it, gives you time to save more, camaraderie, and lastly because you've already done...
The OP stated that since they are husband and wife they will be splitting the load... which would put that 6 lbs tent @ 3 pounds per person just like the hubba you plan to carry. I know its heavy by...
