Absolutely! I hike a lot on the Ma. AT for exercise & as a quick getaway. The northern and southern 15 miles are wonderful, with the middle just something to get through. Good 20+ mile/ day hiking.

Sorry - I should add that I carry a down jacket for camp and rest stops. I have it to hike in only if conditions get really wild ( as in, "I'm bailing NOW!).
A wind shell is always in my pack. It's the most versatile item of clothing that I carry.
Polypro long sleeve under 200 wt. Fleece under wind shell is my choice down to 15 degrees F. Hat & gloves of your choice. Silk weight long johns under nylon pants, if necessary (for me, usually when...
Stayed there in Nov. 2017. A week later, according to the AT website, a bear stole a hiker's food in that area. Did not say it was at the shelter, though.
Nobody asked "How much?" yet?? I'm not shopping, but more info (or a link) would be helpful.
I experimented with Asics trail runners, Sealskinz socks, and full-on 8 point strap-style crampons on a trip in Harriman park on NY a few years ago. the straps compressed the socks & my feet got cold...
"Ultralight" and "freestanding" are almost mutually exclusive, unless exotic (and expensive) materials are used. even most freestanding winter mountaineering tents require that you stake out the...
My bottle holder slides up and down the lower part of my shoulder strap. it sits on top of the hip belt when I'm hiking, and I slide it up to access the bottle. An Outdoor research insulated holder...
I had the same bivy - same problem. Tried other bivies - same problem. Bought a Hilleberg Akto - no problem. Moisture was still there, but at least it was on the inside of the tent. Getting in and...
Don't forget the crampons!
Fwiw, if you have extra room in your sleeping bag, you can wear clothing in it for extra warmth. A draft-free tent and a mattress with a high r-value should be considered part of your sleep system,...
Oh, from experience - Southbound hiking has left me with sunburn on several occasions. I prefer to do sections Northbound, when possible.
Another thumbs down on liners. They have only one use, better to have down sleepwear (expensive, but very light, compact, and warm), silk underwear (light, comfy, compact, but not very warm),...
I heard about this a couple of weeks ago from thruhiker Freebyrd (2015) a friend of mine that I dropped off (and hiked with) in Georgia last March. I met Jack a few times while he worked near the...
Sorry for above post typos. Computer doesn't like whiteblaze.
Dead weight. I've hiked Georgia twice in March, this year & 2006. Had about 1/2" of snow this year, none in '06. I would buy some bicycle toe straps and put some small nuts and bolts through them and...
During the day while walking I rarely get cold hands. In winter I always carry a stainless water bottle as plastic bottles get brittle & can crack. Whenever there's a fire at night I fill the bottle...
Forest duff. Problems with website or my cptr.
Ti wire stakes don't work well in loose fore duff. V or Y stakes are what I carry now.
Giant mosquito net? Try Integral Designs. Well, they USED to make the Bugamid. Just checked. No longer. Sorry..

Tinker. Prefer to hike alone, camp with others. Have hiked a little more than 1/2 of the trail in sections. have climbed New England's 4,000+foot mountains except for 2 in Baxter Park. Climbed...

Walk it off. ;) :)
Meant to say you'll get caught by those who started LATER - BIG oops :o
