The IAT is amazing, however there isn't much camping on the southern part of it. Lots of great info can be found at iceagetrail.org

I walked about 75 miles, from the valley back to Red's/Devils Postpile, and I flew in and out of Mammoth, taking the shuttle to the valley and the shuttle out from Devil's Postpile.
I'll say, the...
I used this quite a bit in planning my trip last year: https://awhite4777.pythonanywhere.com/SierraMapperAlpha/default/start
I will say, going up and over Red Peak Pass, and then camping short of...
Weight isn't the only reason to carry or not carry something.
There is something to be said for convenience.
I don't mind cold food on a hot summer night, and re-hydrating couscous throwing in...
I tried waterproof, then just went with regular trail runners sized up for the extra pair of socks. I had plastic bags ready for longer hikes if my feet started feeling too cold or numb (they really...
I suffer from the same thing, (I sweat, a lot) and I tried waterproof shoes in similar situations and they did one thing: Kept my feet wet, all day, and gave me swamp-foot and lots of soft skin and...
Access is the biggest difference. The more people know about something, the more people will try to do it. It's a numbers thing.
It is much easier to become involved, figure out what it would take,...
Walking the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin, I do this regularly. Gatorade bottles and cans of Bud Light seem to be the worst offenders.
The braces will work to relieve pain, but they won't cure the underlying issue. Much like duct tape will fix that broken hole in your tent... but you probably want a more permanent fix long-term.
The backpack is the absolute last place I would skimp. A bad pack will result in hip/leg/back pain while carrying even the lightest of loads. Not what you want if you're planning to walk long...
I concur. I even get the "protein" granola stuff (with chocolate flavor) because I enjoy it more :)
A picture is worth 1,000 words. What pack do you have?
I put my sleeping bag uncompressed into the bottom of my bag (in a loose sack to keep it clean) and let it fill in all the gaps, instead of...
I love my Notch. I've used it for 3 years of backpacking adventures.
I can set it up in under 3 minutes, and get a pretty taut pitch with regularity now. It took some practice. :)
The only thing...
That is a brilliant suggestion!

Beyond being more active, one specific and easily done exercise I'd recommend is doing planks (both regular and side) It is truly easy (in a I don't need gear and it takes 2 minutes sense) and will...
www.caltopo.com is a great resource, you can go to fedex (or anywhere else) and print your own maps - 11x17 paper fits almost perfectly when folded in half in a gallon ziplock for waterproofing too.
I use backcountry navigator and pre-download maps for areas, then import any GPS tracks I may want to use while on my trip. It does cost ~$10, but it's been completely worth it for my usage.
That section was not on the JMT. It was an alternate exit from Yosemite to get a JMT permit from Red's to Whitney. JMT permits are currently limited by the regulation of the exit over Donahue pass.
Wow, I'm supposed to keep my headlamp in my carryon? I never would've known.... (shows how much I fly)
I understand completely :) It was pretty deserted when I was there last August. I think I saw 6 people total (two of whom were hiking the same route as me) the entire time from Lower Ottoway Lake to...
The trails out over Red Peak pass and Isberg pass are pretty easy to follow while you're still in Yosemite. Once you hit Ansel Adams Wilderness the trails aren't as well signed, but having a decent...
Here are the biggest variables in Miles-per-day:
1) How long will you hike each day? The person who walks for 15 hours almost always goes further than the person who walks for 6.
2) How fast you...
Just a suggestion, but shuttle at the start, not at the end of your hike. Always nice to end up at your car... and not waiting for and then stinking up someone else's. :)
As I continue to explore the state, ended up wandering the IAT near Medford, WI a few weeks ago. Was an absolutely beautiful 5 mile walk, wish I would've had more time to adventure further with my...
Walking longer is key #1.
To walk faster, you need to improve form and technique.
1: Walk tall. Try not to look at your feet (sometimes this is unavoidable, I know) look 10 to 20 feet ahead....
