Bootcamp is 99% metal. Don't worry about it. I'm a Marine and we have the longest hardest bootcamp. I went in at age 27, cancer survivor, and with less than impressive physical conditioning (2 max...

Under 300 annual SOBO's is the last number I read. Not 100% sure though.

I always carry one but I've honestly never used it unless I've been bored to death and pull it out to fiddle around. I always carry one...
I hike with both. I also carry alcohol wipes. The small little 3 fold ones. They weigh nothing and are nice to have for cuts and scrapes as well. The hand sanitizer thing doesn't work for me. There...
Going to catch grief for this, I know, but I don't care. Never understood why people would want to hike with their dog. Maybe on a super private trail like BMT or PCT, but not the AT... way too many...
Clif bars rock. Millennium bars are a little more expensive, but higher in calories and taste a lot better.
Packing my apartment and going to the Greyhound station to catch my bus to Bangor, Maine!
Seriously? :)
The official registry gets a little crowded with all the people heading north and so few of us, so, I thought I'd make an unofficial thread for us to keep in touch and maybe get to know some of you...

Excited! Got a year to plan and save! Was going to go this July but had a few hiccups and didn't want to financially leave myself any...
My imagination is probably the scariest thing I can think of put in the woods alone, at night!
I'd have to say sorry, currently working on a life dream. If it matters that much to him/them, they wouldn't mind either flying you back or excusing your absence. I don't know many of my friends that...
Who knows where I will be. I'm trying to save every penny I get to be able to leave July 1st for my SOBO thru. Super expensive car repairs and possibly having to move from my current residence June...
Never understood night hiking anyway. Taking a spill in the dark is a really fast way to end your thru hike. Too each his own and HYOH I guess.
Marines can carry way more than the average Joe, infantry Marines anyway... Field strip it the way they showed you in boot right before you went for BWT. That's half the trash and a fair amount of...
I may stay in a few hostels along the way, mainly the key ones everyone says you MUST stay at (Shaw's etc). Post offices however probably will never see my face. I'm going for the trail, not towns.
Love my Go-Lite pack. Obviously light, and got a killer deal on it.

Best hiker insurance = duct tape :D
You can go into any grocery store and buy a box of Crystal Light packets that go into a bottle of water for like $2 for a box of 12. I personally think they are all too strong, so I split one packet...
Freeze dried cats for dinner?
Packs are overrated, like food and spare undies.
You should have alcohol for your nightly foot rub as is... if you don't bounce a pair and have to borrow another hikers clippers... just put some alcohol on them maybe? But no, when I go on hikes...
Most canister stoves I have experience with are Iso-propane blends, not straight propane.
Oh, and the velcro ones suck. Stick to the old-school elastic bands with the hooks.
They are called "boot bands". You can get them at any military surplus store. I get mine on base for like $0.30 a pair. Can't be much more than that online.
