There's even more smoke today than yesterday at the Brevard (Davidson River) end.

The air is kind of hazy and it smells like a campfire. I was going to hike around Bent Creek (Pisgah Forest) today but decided not to. Down near Brevard (Davidson River end of Art Loeb) it still...
The smoke travels a long way - it kind of smells like a campfire outside even though the fires are quite a ways from here.
There's smoke hanging in the air all over out here. Lake Lure area really burning up - they're getting ready for evacuations in some places.

Thanks for all the great responses. There's a lot of great information here and I appreciate it!
Forgot to say... I would need to use internet on it from time to time but not on a daily basis. Basically work on documents and then send them out on the internet when I'm finished. Thanks!

Well....then again, maybe not - I just realized Art Loeb goes right through that same area with the bear canister requirements...
Art Loeb Trail might be an option - about 30 miles. Can park on the Brevard end and get a shuttle.
Just FYI - Camping is closed right now by Graveyard Fields and Bear canisters are required by Black Balsam. Lots of bear activity in the area.

Great tips everyone - I appreciate your help.
Where's the best place to stay in Damascus - where you get a private room.

I just read about the new Montbell Down Hugger 900 #2 - it is supposed to have a stretch of 18-22 inches. Editor Choice in Backpacker's gear guide.
Wondering if anyone has used this and what you...
