Pluck and shave on my days off in town. I carry tweezers for ticks and buy a cheap disposable while in town.
Last year I flew into Albany and took Amtrak to Rutland then a taxi ride to the trail.
Contacts work for me. I use extended wear. Sleep in them and change them out every 7 days or so. I take my glasses just in case and bounce box extra contacts up the trail.
I've used Amtrak for traveling from NM to various sections of the trail several times. I've never had any problem with my pack. I've had with me at my seat and in the luggage rack.
