I hate everything new.
I still hike with a wood frame pack, just like grandpa's grandpa did.
All new ideas, are dumb ones.
The best shoe I have ever walked, run, trail run, and hiked in......

I wear New Balance Minimus Trail and my wife wears Merrell Pace Gloove Trail, both of are "barefoot" minimalist shoes. We are starting out thru hike May 14th NOBO. These shoes work great as long as...
Kyle and Bet "(formally Oleskool and Willsee)
we are going NOBO around May 12th
Going for no broken foot this year!
Yes, the packa works great as a shell layer and the HUGE "pit zips" offer plenty of ventilation. (from my ribs to elbows zip open or closed)
Yes The Packa. My wife and I use them, they are great. Very expensive, but wonderful and it comes with a "2,000 mile money back warranty"

LED headlamp, digital camera (AAA battery's) and digital watch with a alarm.
Love it! Love it! Love it!
On the AT you should be fine without maps. They do provide interesting side trails, roads and towns. And possibly handy (with a compass and the skills to use them) in a very bad situation like hurt...
14624This past Feb the wife and I set out on our NOBO, that ended north of Hot Springs 3 weeks later me having a very badly smashed ankle. We are going again this year doing the BMT to the AT.... on...

My wife and I are full time tarpers, Ive been using tarp since I was a kid on hunting trips with my Pops. Its the only way to go once you learn how to use one. I would suggest a RayWay or BearPaw...
By Late Feb there should be plenty of nobo's on the trail if you are looking to have a partner (or team) to hike with.
45 Miles, Cosby knob shelter in GSNP to Hot Springs. It took 24 hrs I had torn some legiments in my ankle and my wife and I made the rush on Hot springs before the swelling got to bad (which it did)....
Recovery is coming along , I think we may go SOBO this year. I miss the trail so, hope everyone is on the trail and loving every step.
The REI Sub Kilo 20 is also a great, cheap, down bag. Gotta be slim build though, seems like it would be tight on a big fella.
Also liquid here, never could "acquire the taste" for tooth brushing with it though.
I stay out of shelters, feel like thats where you need em. So no plugs here.
I think we are in in good enough shape to thru hike, we both fixed gear bike instead of owning cars and are avid runners, just bad luck on icy roots in GSMNP. SNP seems like a good idea for this...
Honest truth, I just very slowly count in my head. That seems to put me right out. Keeps all the bear, ghost, aliens, and bigfoots out. Meds give me a groggy hangover deal in the morn.
Good Luck everyone!!!
Thanks to everyone, it says so much about the hiking community that everyone is so supportive of each other. Just goes to show that what you hear time and time again about the AT is true..."Its all...
For now we are just starting to gear up for next spring, get my ankle back at 110%. I would hate to put money and time into getting back at it this year and going a short distance only to re injure...
I keep my very short, just over waist high. Its all about personal comfort to me.
