Used to use Platypus, until two of them leaked through the seams (at the opposite end from the hose connection) - since I've switched to camelback, which are great except that I find the suction...
I should also mention, after my platypus disfunction I got to experience the crappy customer service provided by Cascade Designs. Even after explaining to them that their product had basically...
I used to love the Platypus setup, until mine leaked through the bottom seam overnight while I was on the AT, soaking my pack and leaving me without a major water-holding device. I'd only had it for...

I was in about the same place you are a year ago - I finished half the AT in 2003 and had to get off to start grad school. At the time it was very hard, and it took me...
Hooray for Trail Mix. And for Slaughter-O's, the best kind of Trail Mix around. Which reminds me, that Talk Like a Pirate day is coming soon, Sept. 19. Not related at all to hiking, but a fun day...
Did it once in '03 in the rain, it was fun. :sun Like taking a shower; I felt very clean afterward! Probably would have done it more often if it had been a less well-populated trail.
My hiking partner-to-be in 2003 ended up dropping out because of illness in her family about a month before we were set to leave; I went anyway and found out that we probably wouldn't have been...
Not to mention a significant increase in those calling for Taxis at Neels Gap or getting stuck in the Smokies and expecting the park rangers to save them. Grrr....
I did think that CNN article...
I've found that some people are just going to worry, no matter what you do, but in my case repeated action helped. When people notice that
A. Their concern, while appreciated, isn't going to...
Looking for feedback on the Big Agnes Seedhouse Superlight 2. For a two-person thru or long section on the AT, most likely -- as opposed to the Hubba Hubba or Sierra Designs Lightning. My main...
That's absolutely tragic. But the world makes sense again, so thanks! I shall treaure my Waldies even more. :sun
This is a random question, but I'm confused and assume there are many wiser than myself who regularly read whiteblaze. So.
What's the deal with Waldies and Crocs? Are these different products...
I've never adjusted my pole lengths while hiking...I do like the "correct" strap position though, as I've caught myself falling quite a few times just because my weight was already on the strap...
There are some nice photos of proper pole loop use here:

...your weight should be on the ball of your hand, and not on the pole grip. Maybe that helps....
Oooh yes, LK, would you post a list of artists and titles that you used on the soundtrack for the DVD? I know I know, it's listed at the end of the film. But it would be really nice to have it all...
I don't know if I would do this, but I saw someone else do it in 2003. The car pulls over and the hiker says "would you happen to have any cigarettes you'd be willing to sell?" The difference here...
The Garmin etrek series has a lot of different models, and I'm not up on the most recent ones, but they probably are the most user-friendly and possibly the lightest useful GPS units that don't cost...
I've been looking at the new ipod shuffle as a possible replacement for the regular ol' mp3 players (I've known many to die quickly on the trail...). For trail use you'd have to get an extra battery...

We got our copy and loved it. Very nice job. I'll second the comment on the music choices too, I might have to go find some of those CD's. One question though - for the first 10-15 min....
I had a pretty bad cold during a rainy couple of weeks coming into Pearisburg. It wasn't fun, but I hiked through it anyway, sore throat and tiredness and all. Admitedly that was mostly because...
Rain gear is just another layer for keeping warm, and perhaps a little less muddy than you'd otherwise be. I always use a set of long underwear as "camp wear" - even if you're putting on soaked...
The train station is easy walking from ATC headquarters, as well as the "historic" hilltop hotel, which is where a bunch of us ended up staying while in Harper's Ferry. My sister met me in '03 by...
Gah. How much would that thing weigh?
And I can't imagine why I would need to have a super-sharp pocketknife. In case my peanut butter freezes..? Does anyone actually carry a sharpening stone...
I liked the "waiting to see what would happen" mode of trail-naming (like I would have chosen "Slaughter" off the top of my head), and that gave the name more meaning for me on the Trail. What...
No experience in the Middle East (North Africa instead)..but as far as travel goes...
Going by camel would be my last resort of the three you gave as options...cames are by no means comfortable,...
