I spent ~$3500 on my thru (excluding gear costs). You can always fundraise through your blog using paypal!
This is a helpful thread because it shows newbies what gear--although maybe not the lightest, etc.--can work for a successful thru. Those shakedowns are part of the experience though and I'm glad I...
I wrote a very detailed, daily account of my 2012-thru-hike. You can find all entries at my blog www.followingblazes.blogspot.com
Hope your dad can rest easy.
Exactly. Bubbly soapy water on the pad will show you the location.
Well, I live in southern New Mexico and I hike the Gila-area of the CDT and you shouldn't have trouble getting to the Gila river for water. Be advised though, it's a dry dry place out here, and not...
Well, I'm from Cleveland, Ohio and all my hiking was in the midwest before the AT. Now that I'm a thru-hiker living in the Southwest, it's a whole other animal out here... You have to be very well...
AggieAl, thanks! That's so funny that someone from Las Cruces responded to my post!!
I've lived here for 9 months now, and I've done a bit of hiking thus far. I agree with you on trail runners in...
Hey everyone,
I wore trail runners on my thru-hike last year and loved them, but now I live in southern New Mexico and it's no green tunnel... Boots are pretty much required for hiking out here...
Rain pants were the only thing I sent home at Neel's Gap, and I never regretted it--even in the rain, snow, wind, and cold. Shorts are plenty!

This IS the place to discuss the nitty gritty details and minute worries that people have prior to their hike. Good for you. Some people spend too much time on here and they get agitated with...
BD, that's great to hear! I wrote every night, and it was never a pain, I always enjoyed it. My biggest hope in writing it was that it would be read, so thanks for confirming that part.
Also,...
Thanks, LD.
Hey, thought I'd mention that I just updated my blog. (www.followingblazes.blogspot.com)
My first blog update in about five months, and for anyone interested, I blogged every day of my thru-hike....
I would like to add that Merino wool is my favorite fabric. Thanks for watching.
I saw this in Backpacker and it gave me goosebumps. Excellent tribute to one of the true badasses.
Bob People's gives his boots blisters!
You'll all make friends easily on trail too. There are tons of people at the start. Also, if you stay at hikerhostel, you'll undoubtedly make a few friends before Springer.
Oh, I forgot, one of the worst things I witnessed almost daily on trail was the dreaded throw-you-garbage-in-the-fire-ring tactic. Please don't, it's bad wilderness ethics, it encourages others to do...
Amen.
The trash component weighs a fraction of what it did before you consumed it. Toughen up and pack it out. :)
HAHAHA!
BTW, I shop at REI because they are a model company: they treat their employees very well and their customers too. Top companies to work for every year for a reason. Let's help them...
Hey, I would recommend the following:
RECONSIDER:
-bring one package of aquamira at a time (one package will last you 3-4 weeks)
-extra AAA batteries. Your iPhone has a flashlight if your...
If it's a bit over, you can always stuff your clothes in the bottom to fill the open space (open space = space your body needs to warm = you may be chilly in a big bag on a cold night).
Bushmills, Irish whiskey.
ULA Ohm 2.0 ; $200 ; 29 oz.
$286, not sure what I want. Amen on the REI Credit Card--big help.
