Um...no. None of them (except for the phone for town use).
Agreed. Thanks for all the reviews from people with first-hand knowledge and the links to other reviews. All very helpful.
I a a big believer in the, "you get what you pay for" philosophy. But every now and then a piece of gear is both dependable and moderately priced.
Does anyone have first hand experience of...
Go outside and play! Play in the woods with some gear. If you like the gear, keep it. If you don't, try some other gear.
The gear doesn't hike for you. It's only hiking/backpacking. Don't over...
Up and running: http://www.trailjournals.com/LeftHand/
I will journal, although the question of whether I post as I go or summarize afterwards has yet to be determined. I will post a link, once my Trailjournals goes active. I do plan on taking it slow...
I will be out for a thru starting October 18th. Taking my time and spending 8 days. Enjoy y'all!
Nimblewill Nomad used one his entire hike, although he is a bad ass.

Agreeing with Karma13...also the hiker trash method would be to get a dish mat at the Dollar Store. I used one of the colored foam ones. It is light and just enough to keep your pad from moving.
Condolences to his family and loved ones.
I would take the woods over almost any other location for safety from us humans. And it sounds like a great time to look into SOBO. Good luck on your hike!
Wow...a lot of overreactions.
The kid(I think he is in his early 20's) is out in the woods, having a blast and on a great adventure. I am pretty sure the spirit of the shelter will forgive him....
HELL NO!!!! *I will admit I am not a fan of rain pants...even when it is raining. But rain pants = hot and sweaty = no air = rashes and chaffing = bad things happening to areas I don't want it to.
For all of those asking about the informal FB Group for 2014, here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/56380495208/
Enjoy the excitement and anticipation!
True enough. I live in Clayton, GA (east of Dick's Creek Gap). It is supposed to be unseasonably warm this weekend, but only because of cloud cover. We haven't had a long stretch of frozen weather...
@Karma13 Sounds like he is rolling with the hike well despite the typical weather and getting lost already.
Keep up the good attitude, rifle!
Here's to you. Good luck and enjoy the hardship. Look forward to reading your journal.
You have always been able to register, and still can register, at the Fontana Dam Visitor Center, before hiking into the park.
I am hoping you meant NOBO in March. Looks like a pretty good start. Jumping in on the previous post, if you are hanging food I would recommend at least 50' of cordage. And if you are watching...
I will always chalk this up to a personal decision. Personal decisions = personal consequences.
I have backpacked areas of the AT from Grayson Highlands south, frequently, for 12 + years now...
Unless you care about the altitude profile, you don't need maps for the AT. One data book, or trail companion, or handbook will suffice. Save on the weight.
I agree; the Ion is my favorite. Just bright enough to hike with with, and no extra lights that won't ever be used.
I don't care either way....Appalachian State already won their 2nd Championship this year.
gotta go with gummi anything for flexibility
