14years.
Yowza.
Tip:
Get a roll of white paper towels, Bounty, with the rip-a-sheet thing size. Put a strip in each bag, then add the dried food, then seal. The paper towel protects against sharp edges poking, such...
Eat what you like at home...and just make it trail friendly.
PS: We don't eat PB anymore. Our youngest has severe food allergies. Don't miss it. We live on Sunbutter instead :)
Well...those crunchy ones are done 2 ways:
Either freeze-dried or flash fried. Dehydrating ALWAYS leave fruit and vegetables hard. Just an FYI.
Dried fruit, if dried right, will last a year or longer. The key is to store it in mason jars after drying. This is airtight. Now then, ALL dried food will have residual moisture. Every month or so...
For those of you who can't find grits in a store - are you looking in the hot cereal section? That is where it is always sold in the Western states.
I love instant grits - I get the plain and add...
Loved when you posted it on Twitter :)
Thank you Connie - yep 3 trail cookbooks now :) And someday..(hahaha) I will have FBC 2 done. The recipes are done but I edit when the kids are asleep and neither of them will nap anymore. Le sigh!...
I shared it over on FB and Twitter with my readers :) Love seeing new ideas!!
Demeter, that looks great!
Btw, if anyone wants to see what Anaphylaxis looks like AFTER an Epi-Pen (15 minutes out) plus allergy meds? This is our youngest son.

An allergy can show up at ANY time in life. Anytime. So please do not think it is "fashionable". Yeesh.
My youngest son has severe, and not so severe allergies to food. His ones to cashews and...
Hah! I do! With two under 4 now, it is a section I have spent too much time in :) BTW, a few companies are now even doing freeze dried foods...I have one new brand that just came, I need to review...
It just isn't worth it. Use a bear canister or an Ursack. Those WILL keep rodents and birds out.
If you make your cozy the right size, you can jam in two bags of food ;-)
As mentioned above, just buy the beans from Harmony House Foods (they are precooked and dried) or rinse, drain and dry canned beans. Use with instant rice, dried onion, some granulated garlic, broth...
I buy direct from Harmony (they also sell on Amazon) and pick and choose what I like. I am on their mailing list, so often get email deals with % off.
My opinion of dehydrators is this: If you think you will use it, a Nesco is a cheap investment. I don't use my dehydrators for meals, rather I dry components, things I cannot buy commercially (like...
Thank you Old Boot! Yes, you can dry it..but there is a trick or two to it :) And don't keep it long, due to the high fat.
I love carrying mini avo's on the trail and eating them right out of the...
While I dry some of my fave "not going to find it commercially" foods, I mostly order from http://www.harmonyhousefoods.com/
I hiked during my last two kids - to a point. I hit second Tri in each and got severely anemic - and even climbing stairs wore me out. But honestly, there is rarely anything bad in hiking when...
It has been my main stove for 5 years or so now :) Never had an issue - at altitude to sea level.
While it isn't light, I carry for my youngest the shelf-stable single serving boxes of So Delicious coconut milk. Our youngest (who is 2) has severe allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs and dairy....
I ate a lot of thinned out foods for years while hiking (dental surgery, braces, implants). Not fun but overall it was OK :)
I cannot say enough about mashed up fresh avocado! They carry well in a...
