I'm seriously considering another thru attempt starting in mid April. I think it's a great time to start b/c you miss a lot of the early season traffic.
I second the Marmot Sawtooth X-Wide. Love that bag.
I'm a BIG fan of my Marmot Sawtooth Extra Wide. I'm 6'3'' and was 310 lbs when I started my thru attempt -- fit great. I'm currently about 230 and still love the bag. I recommend it to all the big...
I highly recommend the NB 908's. They come in wide sizes (obviously) and are much tougher than the 800 series.
I read it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed. I also work in a major college athletic dept, and there's quite a movement in the track & field community to get away from high-tech cushioned...
I was talking to the track coaches here in the athletic department and they love them. There's also quite a bit of research showing that using a minimum amount of cushioning will almost instantly...
Easy Mac! I lived on the stuff. Very easy to make and easy on fuel. I would bring my water to a boil, cut off the gas and cover. The pasta was ready in 5 min or so, then you just add the cheese mix....
on my '07 hike i lived off easy mac. i highly recommend it with a pack of flavored tuna! man, i'm hungry just thinking about it.....
I weighed in at about 310 at springer and by the time i had off 714 miles later i was about 260.
Like any athlete I follow, I love being able to constantly check their progress. As a guy who works in social media I also love seeing the use of things like twitter to help hikers keep their loved...
Funny story: When I started my thru attempt in '07, one of the first guys I saw was a black guy descending to the Springer shelter. My dad and I (both ex-military) remember him wearing an Airborne...
i also switched to a light 45f bag but usually only used it as a quilt. more often than not, i just used my bag liner.
I have a friend in Cave Spring that was awoken by the quake. They originally thought a tree had fallen on the house. After going outside the whole neighborhood was up -- looking around in confusion.
I disagree. I bought the same ones and hiked through twenty days of rain on the Bibbulmun Track. They saved my food, electronics and guide book when everything else was soaked. I've also tested them...
I use Easy Mac. I was concerned that it says, 'microwave only' but it works fine with just adding boiling water. Man, I lived off that stuff. Good times...
Yeah, definitely not 15 in my experience. A couple at most.
Van Diemen's Land is the original name of Tasmania, not the whole of modern day Australia.
ain't that the truth.
I was so nervous I thought I was going to puke. Hadn't felt like that since my first deployment in the military. However, the moment I set foot on the trail I was fine. Granted I failed my attempt at...
I was a victim of the 'new model' in 2008. The ones I bought in MRO in '07 were great and lasted 600 miles. The newer version never did fit right and fell apart after 300 miles.
I think hikers should enjoy their experience in the way that suits them best. I do find it odd that people will sign a form declaring that they made an honest effort to follow the entire white-blazed...
I walked from Springer almost to Neels without using my hip belt.
hmmm....officially reconsidering my desire to thru hike the AZT
works quite well
