I plan on wearing them on my entire hike. When I don't go barefoot.
Wordsworth's 'The Prelude' and then Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass'.
What are some of the other traditions?
SO do people just pound in the stakes with a rock or do they carry a hammer with?
I have a beard and dreadlocks. Although I like this look while I'm at home (yes I do wash my hair often) I feel like while in the woods I'll look even more wild. But that's how I want to look.
I'm getting really anxious at this point. I got let go from my job a month and a half before I was going to leave for the hike (I was just seasonal) and now I'm trying to find some temp work to get a...
It took me a long time to actually start posting on WB. And I know I still havn't done a lot of that. It can be intimidating at first.
The 2013 Thru Hiker thread on here already has sooo many...
They're on sale for the next few days at the Gander Mountain near me and I'm considering buying them. Anyone have anything to say about them?
If long distance backpacking ever became an Olympic sport, I'd join the USA team.
I usually carry a flask and I have a tobacco pipe. But both of those I dont use every day whilst hiking and am definetly not rowdy or in people's faces over it.
THIS as well. I feel like everyone is getting tired of me talking about my hike, and I know it is only going to get worse. I dread the 12 hour drive to get to the trail. I'll be so anxious.
Yellowblazing it is then.
Alright Class of 2013, most of use are around two months out. Has anyone dropped out yet? Anyone's resolve been strengthened? I'm excited to get on this conquer this trail and finally put some faces...
I'm not so much nervous as I am anxious about getting going. I'm not trying to be arrogant in saying this, but I know that I can finish my thru hike. I've had the fire burning in my belly to do it...
I fully plan on doing the same thing. My plan is to hitchhike or find a bus or train to take. I really want to make it there.
That is a great idea!
A friend of mine gave me 10+ cans of spam for my first long distance solo hike and I made the mistake of repacking it from the cans to vacuum seal bags. It turned grey within...
As long os you carry a something like a pot or trekking poles that double as a club to beat up the annoying hiker purists, I think they'll let you pass.
I second Sir Winston! I'm a pipe smoker and don't plan on giving it up while hiking. Its cool that there are cigar smokers on the trail as well, knowing how to enjoy the finer things whilst roughing...
Does anyone else carry fresh eggs while hiking or have you while you thru hiked? If so, how'd it work out? I'm a big fan of poaching an egg in some ramen.
Giantsbane. I kill giants. And in mid-March I begin the hunt for another giant, Mount Katahdin.
One my last week long hike it hit on the second day.
I'm not sure if anyone has already asked this before (or knows it) but how do people track their miles on the trail? Are there mile markers? Or do people just use the guide book and kind of guess?
. . .Seriously?
Whitman's poetry is so transcendant. I fully plan on having it on my hike. What's amazing is that each time you read it you get something different from the poems and as you get older the meaning...
