Either way you can't go wrong. Extending out on the SOBO side, to just north of Pearisburg (VA 641, Clendennin Road), will quickly take you up to Peters Mtn for a nice ridge walk before taking you...

Plenty of short but rewarding hikes in the Roanoke Valley itself, if you want to stretch your legs after driving all day. If you are staying in town head up to the Roanoke Star and enjoy the network...
IMO, the Eastern half is more scenic (which comes with a bit more ruggedness on the southeastern portion). The western half follows an old rail bed, a creek, and some uninteresting terrain near some...
Thanks, everyone... I'm going SOBO from PenMar, which is quite rocky and involves a bit of scrambling for the first 2ish miles up to High Rock. That's the only place I'm concerned about.
Greetings,
I am planning on starting a long day hike early in the morning on 10/28, which will involve 2-3 hours of night hiking prior to twilight. I was hoping to get some tips from anyone that...
I'd think you'd have a bit of trouble finding suitable hammock spots, but it is certainly doable, as long as you have a fairly open window for finding spots and are willing to carry water a bit.

An underrated trail indeed. I've completed 2 full loops of it thus far, and will be back. Great pics!
Ambitious plans to get to Waterton.
1. Breckenridge is good, but my wife and I ended up staying in Frisco/Dillon instead. Had an outfitter, brewery, and good food next door.
2. Twin Lakes...
I have personally never used them, but also am not against them. Of my two longest hikes (450 miles and 200 miles), I simply enjoyed having my hands free for water bottles, snacks, consulting data...
My general rule of thumb is 1 liter per 4-5 miles, plus 1/2 liter for every 1,000' gained. So, if I know I have 10 miles to the next water source, and there's a 1,000' climb in between, 2.5 liters...
100% of the time for at least your first week, ~90-95% of the time afterwards. Just from my own experience.
Rob, pardon my ignorance with the lack of knowledge regarding the afternoon thunderstorms, but do you (and others) typically pitch your tent and wait storms out in your tent? Or do you wait the...
Colorado_rob, Do you know what the mileage is from the CW to Huron Peak and back?
Hoping Monsoon season doesn't extend too far into August this summer, but maybe I'm just being too selfish :)
We are starting the weekend of August 5th.
If you don't have to be on the AT, you should consider either the Allegheny Front Trail just north of State College, PA (~42 mile loop) or the Quehanna Trail just north of that (~75 mile loop). Much...
Wow. Terrible and unexpected news. He surely touched many a life of thru and section hikers.
Wearing low-cut boots or runners SHOULD help strengthen those ankle muscles. Three ankle surgeries later, I have found that running in running shoes (I know, sounds funny, but I never used to run in...
Thank you, Bear Creek. We will consider Enterprise as the easiest alternative.
Thanks, but I do not see a single post about transportation from Durango to the Durango airport, besides one saying that hotels in town will do a shuttle (we do not plan on staying in one of these).
Hello,
So it looks like the best option at the end of our hike is to obtain a rental car from the Durango Airport area. Are there any local bus options or decently reliable taxi services in...
only if you want to spray the ultra lighters
The Panera Bread around me usually has the small squeeze packs of grape and strawberry jelly. Good for small amounts of them.
I agree; sounds like an outing on the Quehanna Trail or Allegheny Front Trail would be better for this type. More (potential) campsites to choose from, and generally MUCH less crowded.
Quick Question to you and/or others: Does the store in Twin Lakes have canister fuel? Trying to figure out the logistics as we will be mailing a box to this location. Thanks!
SoWEbo (we have the neighborhoods in SW Baltimore collectively called this!)
Anyways, my wife and I intend to SWBO the CT next summer.
