If you are a fast hiker nine days sounds reasonable. I hiked Unicoi to Fontana Dam in six days last April, but I was beat afterwards. I'm sure I could have went on to Newfound Gap in three more days....

Pinch In Trail is on the other side of the gorge. It's about 2 miles down to the river and very steep. The river there is very nice and you can catch some big fish there.
:-?
12 days of food at approx 2 lbs per day = 24 Lbs
3 Liters of Water = 6 Lbs
Did this hike in reverse last month. It took six days to hike the 100 or so miles. Some long and steady climbs. The only food stop we did was in Hot Springs.
It's long and steady. No big deal. The top of Snowbird has been recently clear cut. There is an FAA radar system on top.
There are no signs there indicating "No Camping". I was going to sleep on the summit a few weeks ago but a late afternoon storm pushed me off.
I was through there last week. The hikers in the shelter said they had their food bags hung in the tree beside the shelter. They woke up to a bear in the tree that had partially broken the limb...
Dunham Tahoma Trail Runner available in 2E or 4E at Campmor.com
I hiked from Clingmans Dome to Spence field shelter in one day last fall. If you've hiked the Northen Georgia AT section it will remind you of that. Rangers are always a little cautious when you talk...
I use a sleeping bag stuff sack. I have several sleeping bags for various temperatures so I always have extra stuff sacks available. Waterproff isn't important to me since my meals are in individual...
You'll be fine in a 20 degree bag. The temperature is normally just below freezing for lows in the smokies this time of year.
Leave the footprint at home, just clean up your tentsite carefully before setting up the tent. Will save 6 ounces. I also use a Pepsi can stove and have for about a year with no problem. They are...
On the subject of beer can stoves, Michelob light has come out with a new can. They are longer than normal cans and almost a half an inch smaller in diameter. I made a stove out of a couple of cans...
I use a soda bottle wrapped with Duct tape. That way there is no chance I will confuse it with my water bottle. i also keep mine in the outside mesh pocket of my pack.
I think it is great. He dances to the beat of a different drum. I would like to meet mweinstone on the trail someday.
Best way to get in shape for hiking is to hike. Keep walking that hill a couple of times a week. Then, after a couple of weeks, add a backpack. You will not get sore after about a month of hiking.
I can really power up hills using them! They have saved my ankles a few times too.
Just completed Unicoi Gap to Fontana. Next long hike will be from the North end of the Smokies to Erwin later in the Spring.
Gatlinburg has cheap rooms all over the place. Good food and beer too!! It can be a bit crowded but I think it's a great place to stay a night or two.
I did the same thing at Siler Bald a few days ago. It's a long way off the trail and a steep climb to go up first thing in the morning. The thing is you actually do more distance and elevation by...
There's not a lot to see between Clingmans Dome and Newfound Gap and the trail mostly parallels the road between the two. For an eight year old that will be a long eight miles. Better option, IMO,...
I got mine last week. They also come with coupons.
Another one from 1983 that's pretty good.

I roll my tent polls up in the therma rest, put it in it's stuff sack, and carry it on the outside of my pack. Never had a problem.
Corn Tortillas with peanut butter or/and Nutella is good stuff. Find it all at Super Walmart anywhere in NC!
