I suspect this response was meant for the other current GPS thread, but I'd have to agree .. that when it comes to the AT you generally won't need extra navigation aids. That doesn't make it...
I always hike with a GPS and will usually take map/compass as well. Frankly, I enjoy the map and compass for in the field navigation ... the GPS is mostly a nice way to keep a record of the hike and...
Be careful there ... the 3rd party products don't typically transfer map data to your GPS. They may transfer waypoints or routes to (and from) the GPS unit, but not map data. For that you have to...
You should be OK if stealth camping ... the only restricted area that comes immediately to mind is around annapolis rocks, which is now off-limits except in the designated areas. I hiked this...
with Wingfoot than many of the recent posters here on WhiteBlaze. Quite frankly, as a mostly lurker on both WhiteBlaze and Trailplace I find the behavior here on WhiteBlaze towards Wingfoot to be...
A few points:
1. I went back weighed unadulterated versions of both my spoon and my fork to see just how much was really shaved off. Same measurements ... so within 1/8 oz, which is the...
The Snow Peak Titanium Spork is listed as .6 oz.
I just got done weighing my gear, including my Lexan fork and spoon. Granted, I have cut the end off of each just a tad so they'd fit inside my...
I have made a tarp and a net-tent by way of the Ray Jardine kits. I have thus far been totally impressed. The instructions (found in the tarp book) are very clear and the kit's are a great value.

i've been using a pair of OR windstopper gloves and have been quite pleased with them. surpsringly good protection (cold/wind) from a thin and light glove. it is not a "winter" glove, mind you...
I am "college educated" but my hiking partners aren't. Hell, one of them hasn't made it past 3rd grade yet and the other is still working on Kindergarten ... but their legs get them there in about...
I just recently completed a "rayway" tarp. Here the bulk of the stress is carried across the ridge seam. The recommended seam here was a flat fell seam and I will say that it creates a plenty...
Great little shelter ... this is one of the traditional, older log style shelters with some newer additions added to it, like a deck, updated privy, etc.
We stopped here for an extended lunch...
This is a very nice shelter with plenty of protection, nice places to cook and clean and eat, and pretty easy access to water.
Here's another picture of the shelter.
This is definately one of the nicer shelters along the MD section. Very well maintained shelter with great views and a nice privy.
Here are a few more pictures:

The Shelter
Definately not the best of shelters. During a visit last October it was still in pretty rough shape. It wouldn't be so bad if it were just an old rustic shelter (in fact in many ways this can be...
I enjoy just about anything from Mary Jane's Farm. Vegetarian and pretty much everything is organic, down to the baking powder.
