Sleeping bag is sold.
I have a Feathered Friends Widgeon (-10 deg F) bag. I've had it for a number of years (10+), but it has never been used. I bought it for a planned winter trip that never materialized. The only time...
I made the switch from mummy to quilt. I carry a light weight down hood to use in conjunction with the quilt for colder temps. For me, the quilt is more comfortable and flexible.
Bandana carried one in 2012. His SVEA was older than many of the hikers.
I don't mind camping near a shelter to take advantage of water source & privy. But I never sleep in the shelter.
Decent rain jacket and a 20 deg bag until Pearisburg, VA. I carried mid weight top and bottom to wear in camp and to sleep.
I have an older Stephenson down filled mattress. You use the stuff sack to inflate the mattress to avoid moisture.
My experience is that yellow jackets become even more aggressive in the fall.
That's pretty much the story of my life. I've either got time or money, but rarely both at the same time.
The Thru Hiker permit for the GSMNP is $20.
I hitched and got a ride rather quickly. If it is raining, it might be more of an issue.
When I hiked in 2012, I purposefully kept my mileage down until Damascus to allow my body time to acclimate to stress and strain of the trail. My thought was that I could not make the hike in April /...
Although I haven't been our recently, I would expect that water could be hit or miss. Some areas of N GA have been getting rain, while others are classified as being in a moderate drought.
I agree with these comments!
I tend to read more during the months with shorter days, and have carried a Kindle. Its extra weight, but less than many paper back books. I think all Kindle's have the wifi. My Kindle has wifi and...
Although not cheap, I really like the Railriders Adventure shirt. I wore it on the CT and found that it was cooler than a thin merino wool t shirt, dried quickly, and did not take odor.
Interestingly, in 2012 before my hike I had a case of tennis elbow and I was worried about how it would react to hiking with poles. As I hiked, it improved and actually went away. I don't know if...
Buy honey at the market in the smallest bottle available. Use it to sweeten oatmeal, tea, etc. At lunch with peanut butter and flat bread. Always have it in my food bag.
If the Exos 58 is too large, leave the lid at home and save a bit of weight.
A ground sheet is also helpful when using an inflatable mattress in some hostels which do not have mattresses, such as The Place in Damascus.
Good advice!!!
Loosing your ID on the trail is a train wreck. Even if you have cash, you can't rent motel rooms, receive packages at the PO (to get a replacement ID), buy transportation tickets (bus, train, etc.).
As others have stated, you are not too old and are in good shape. Evaluate your gear to keep your pack weight down. The southern AT is ideal to start out with lots of resupply points and typically...
Another option for a "flat" bottles are Listerine bottles, although I'm not fond of the child proof caps.
Agree. On steep down hills, you can see your future.....
