Hey Colonel Chaco, do you have a link where we can purchase the book? Or a bookstore (I live in Greenville, SC which isn't too far from Asheville)? Thanks.
As a NOBO, I finished early (July 27th) so I saw the most SOBOs right before the 100 mile wilderness as they were coming out of it. I would recommend waiting a little later (like mid August) in VT....
I didn't shave for the 4 1/2 months I was thru-hiking.. this became a good thing once it warmed up and the New England bugs wanted to taste my face. Sorry, beard in the way.
This is so sad. I wish his family the best during the holiday season because it will be extremely hard. If there is anything or anyways that the hiking community can help or provide, please let us...
Just before the 100 mile wilderness (after it for SOBOs) was where I saw and passed the most SOBOs.. I finished in late July. I saw my first SOBO in the Presidentials.
Personally, there are a few pieces of core equipment that should not be skimped on. One of the most important is the sleeping bag. I recommend going with the WM Alpinlite for your size. I have an...
I used the Handbook in 2006 and loved it. It looks like the 2009 is going to be really up-to-date with some new features packed into the same size book. I would go with the Handbook definitely.
What type of shoes did you use? I find that my knees kill me when I used boots, then I started using trail running shoes, which are much lighter and I haven't had knee problems since.
I had ACL...
Invite all the wild women over, post a flyer that you are having a hunter party (with wild women and free venison, of course), then go hiking...
Maybe someone should start setting up some frisbee golf "holes" and the A.T. can become the world's longest extreme croquet field and frisbee golf course!
There is a privy for each season.. maybe a recommendation should be made to tear the walls off of one (summer), put up three walls to block the wind on another (Fall), and insulate one with an...
I thru-hiked in 2006 and didn't see another trail (other than a short day hike here and there) for a year. I am starting to get the bug to get out again, mainly because I have forgotten about the...
I have lived in the "woods" almost all 28 years of my life, but seriously backpacking since I was 16. What would that be? 12 years, and just in those 12 years I am amazed at how much technology has...
I guess I should have put in my 2 cents: I would have like to have been told to wear quick wet quick dry clothes rather than Gore-Tex, especially in the footwear department.
Awesome videos Stryder.. I wish more people could do this. What kind of camera did you use? I just bought a Flip camera and it would be perfect for backpacking.
I was just wondering what everyone wishes they could know or get help with before heading out for a thru-hike of the A.T..
I see gear questions, food questions, planning questions, etc.
If you...
YES! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone that has helped or contributed to the A.T. (and everyone else).
I am thankful that you contributed to my successful thru-hike in 2006.
Miss Janet, I...
Hitching to Bangor is so easy then the Greyhound Station is also easy to find. So: Hitch to Bangor, taxi from hotel to Greyhound, then long long trip home (well depends on where you live, mine was...
I definitely started the trail without doing any training.
The important thing is that you do not over-do yourself when you first start. The only reason that a lot of training is necessary is if...
That's awesome. Thanks for following me and letting me know who you are. I plan on sending updates whenever I update my blog with some useful backpacking info.
Totem.. I try not to dick around...
Does anyone on here use Twitter?
It is like the update feature on Facebook, only much cooler and more interactive. I think we backpackers and hikers should band together and form a Twitter...
Lol.. you have everything I mentioned (with the 5 Fingers replacing Crocs). Whoops. Good choices.. I'll continue looking then. Good luck.
Backpack, Warm Sleeping Bag, and Clif Bars.
Two pairs of Smartwool PHd Light Mini Socks, a SnowPeak Titanium Spork, SnowPeak Titanium Trek 700 Cookset, and some Crocs Caymans.
That, IMO, is the best $100 spent on serious backpacking gear.
