    Default Appalachian Trail Passport

So I see there is a $6.00 booklet called the Appalachian Trail Passport (different from the National Parks Passport), where you can have hostels, campgrounds, etc., stamp the book as a memorable keepsake.

For those who've used this, was it worth the extra ounce? Are you glad you took it along, or is it a waste of time, money and weight - and why.

This is new for this year, so no one has used it yet. Ask again in 6 months

The idea doesn't appeal to me. That should not matter to you. At worst you ditch the ounce early and are out $6,

We had Passport books at Philmont Scout Reservation this year. Good idea but most got soaked and then tossed.

I don't want to get sidetracked to get stamps.

I thought it was a bit childish at Philmont for 14-16 yr old boys.

I think its really stupid for adults.

So, who will be the first to stop at every hostel, motel and town to get all the stamps?

I think the purpose is to get a stamp from places you visit, not from every place you can.
I wouldn't bother with it but HYOH.

I like it. Reminds me of the movie The Way.

i think when the reality of stamping all the herd starts to hit the places with their own stamp, they are gonna get sick of it. other than to keep a souvenir there is just no purpose for it. some marketing for the businesses, come in get your stamp, while you're here buy some stuff. i did the camino years ago, i'm not sure where my passport is anymore. but the compostella, the completion certificate, is framed on my wall in a spare bedroom. and even to get that, there is no proof, you could go in and BS them for it. and not like i go gaze it regularly. on the camino you don't camp or shelter, its all hostels, they just stamp you when you check in. some of them get touchy if you didn't stay in the last village and get a stamp, which can happen if you make alot of miles/kilometers. but thats where you get the stamps there, at hostels. i'm not sure how it will play out on the trail. i don't see it lasting into next year, it will be a tried and failed idea this year.

I picked one up. It's novelty, I don't plan on playing pokemon with it (gotta catch em' all!), but I will gather stamps where I stop at and it will be a keepsake and reminder of where I went and stayed. Kind of a play by play of how my trip unraveled before me. I don't think it's necessary, but it worked for the camino and people seem to enjoy it. If it fails after this year then I'll be one of the only people to have an AT passport. If not I'll be one of the first people to ever get an AT passport. Either way I'm excited about it.

I haven't gotten one yet, but I fully intend to. Our approach to the trail is different from most, and It's perfect for our purposes.

I have mine and will only get it stamped either where I stay, gear replacement outfitters etc. I will use it in conjunction with my journal which will then get stored away and when I'm gone, maybe one of my kids will find it, read it and maybe it will spark a flame in one of them. Otherwise, it will most likely get tossed with all the other stuff they don't want. Either way I look at it, I will have enjoyed it.

How many people are going to actually have stamps though? I think that may be an issue. "Hey, can you stamp my book?!!"..................."Nope."

There will be many places to have this stamped. A great number of hostels are participating (so I've heard anyway).
