Silly *****............stamps?
We don't need no stinkin stamps.
Don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams
I've seen stupider ideas. This at least has some tradition behind it. Possible benefits to local businesses and the ATC as well. ATC magazine has had commercial ads for a couple years now. Whiteblaze has ads. As an old geezer I can dismiss the whole concept as a blatant commercial ripoff and say I'm above all that. But this is America, buddy. This is what we do. Find endlessly creative ways to cash in on a good thing.
I guess we'll see if it is popular or not after this year. I have hiked the first 820 miles of the trail in the last eight years and only encountered four of the businesses on the list, so it wouldn't be appealing to my style of hiking.
"Waning Gibbous" would be a great trail name.
I already have good a record of everywhere I spent money. My credit card statements.
It seems like the people who are excited about the concept are people that haven't hiked the AT yet, while the people that are against it are people that have already hiked the AT.
Hey...when you toss that paper map, you gotta add some weight somewhere.
The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.
Its been interesting to see people get agitated about the AT Passport. Do it or not? Who cares! I've been collecting stamps from the places I've visited and will have something to commemorate my thru. Truly, HYOH on this topic.

Nope, no transaction required. Go in, be friendly, and ask if they will stamp your passport. Half of the places had the stamp sitting on the counter as a DIY action.

Rickb, maybe you shuttled with them, purchased some food, or just stopped by to say "hello".

This is a copycat scheme of the Pilgrim's Passport from the Camino de Santiago. There, it serves a real purpose in as much that you need the passport to stay at Albergues (hostels) and obtain low priced meals.
Everyone has a photographic memory. Not everyone has film.
Just returned from a 10 day section north from Springer. The Passport idea is very popular, hostels very willing to stamp, no drama.
Great idea, enhances the experience.
Well, im sure there are many hikers who have been using this now.
can we get some pics of the passport pages? Im guessing they look nowhere near as nice as the pics posted above.
Im visioning faded ink, crooked stamps, and runny lines.
