For raw almonds, try Costco if you have one near you. Trader Joes is famous for its Two Buck Chuck wine (not available in CT grocery stores). They also carry goats' milk, which my secretary says keeps her beautiful. I make a point of buying it for her when I'm there.

CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid are the secret for raw almonds. At least one of the three have them BOGO monthly.

You can also get those, Annie Chun brand I think, for about $1 at wally world. I usually pay that same price for them at TJs though. YES, reduce the packaging bulk. I do the same thing - sprinkle crumbled up into meals, soups, or snack on them. I find it best to repack into a tightly sealed baggie with moisture absorption packet which they usually have inside the original packaging.

TJs and others have powdered Goats milk made by Meyenberg(worth a try, check it out before committing to it for trail use though as it's a flavor that's not the same as those habituated to cow's milk) and also vanilla flavored soy protein powder/milk(delish, especially in millet, amaranthe and oatmeal w dried berries and almonds/walnuts in hot b'fasts). While we're at it, and as I know so many of us are protein crazy, a good source of protein can be had by mixing in a tbsp of hemp protein powder to oatmeal, chili, mashed potatoes, and other trail dishes. TJ's sells Bob's Red Mill hemp protein poder.

Don't miss the meat- you can get buffalo jerky (and other flavors), as well as sausages that don't need refrigeration. Many hard cheeses will keep for a long time. Add a box of couscous, some liquid bullion cubes (individually packaged), hard crackers. granola, tea bags, and peanut butter to the previously mentioned items like nuts and energy bars and you're almost packed. You can sometimes pick up some items like smaller tubes of hand lotion if you need to restock.

They also have heavy foods that you can eat on your way out of town, like apples, cucumbers, and peanut butter filled pretzels though I doubt there's many TJ's next to the trail to make these worth while for most backpackers. But since I started shopping there several times a week (it's close enough to walk to, and I love cutting through the woods to get there before crossing a busy highway), I've discovered that they have almost everything you need if you "shop the perimeter, not just the aisle".

I forgot to mention the fruit leather- the ends and pieces are one of the best deals going.

The 'just add water' mixes (various scones, muffins, cakes). Pack 3/4 cup or so of mix in a Ziploc. On trail add just enough water to moisten the mix. Cut (or bite) a corner off the Ziploc and squeeze into three foil muffin cups. Steam 15-20 minutes in a Fauxbaker (can be done with an ounce of alcohol if you have a stove that can simmer, or boil the water and then simmer with a tea light). Fresh hot muffins on the trail.
I always know where I am. I'm right here.

I am usually a raw almond eater. Howsoevermoreanyway.... the "Roasted and salted Marcona Almonds with Rosemary" blow raw almonds completely away. Seriously...you should try some...unless of course you do hate rosemary...in which case....nevermind.

If you can find a trader joes for a re-supply, go for it - - lots of great instant coffee choices, chocolate nuts, deals on cliff bars, dried fruit, nuts, very decent mac and cheese, cheap box wine, pretty much hiker re-supply gold

A TJs is opening up in Boulder in two weeks on Valentine's Day. I know many people are just chomping at the bit to shop there. Mrs Mags is esp excited. TJs is owned by a German grocery store chain and they stock items typically only found back home for her.

I already told her I am avoiding the place like the plague for the first few months as I can only imagine the crowds. Myself and crowded, congested areas don't mix well.
