    Default Hiking Skirts

My girlfriend thru hiked the AT in 2012. Her trail name is Purple Rain. She started out with convertible pants from Rei. Those lasted about 100 miles. Soon moved to a running shorts/ icebreaker legging combo. Finished the hike out in a similar combo to this. She was frustrated by the combo for many reasons.
She spent the winter after her hike designing a hiking skirt which we took on the PCT last summer, hiking the Oregon section. The skirt uses a yoga style waistband so there are no buttons or other awkward fasteners that apply pressure with a backpack's waist belt. The skirts have pockets which allow for easy access to phone and map/guidebook pages. Easy to layer with leggings (I.e. You don't have to take off your shorts to remove leggings when getting hot. Airflow is huge she says. Also, she can stop, squat, and pee with little effort. She just started selling them on etsy and locally here in portland. Here's a link to her site for all you awesome female thrus: http://etsy.com/shop/purplerainskirts

Very nice and competitively priced! I haven't switched to a skirt yet, but i like the idea. I'd have to wear a bike short under it to combat chafing. What I'd really love is Exofficio boxer briefs for women!

Thanks for checking them out. Does icebreaker not make female shorts/briefs? They should get on that.

Great style, but I'd need more of a skort. Athleta carries a similar looking skort that has mesh shorts underneath that would be perfect.

Wow, this might be the thing I am looking for. I hiked last summer in an old tennis skirt and compression shorts. This looks easier and cooler.
Well done! Is the fabric like yoga pants?

Trish, the fabric of the main skirt body is a stretch polyester. So comfortable, breathable, and quick drying. So maybe like yoga pants? The waistband is yoga pants style. Any expert questions like this send to Mandy through her Etsy site. She's quick to respond and has all the info. Thanks!

I got this skirt http://melanzana.com/catalog/product...products_id/35 while hiking the Colorado Trail last year - I love this skirt. It's made in Leadville CO. They sew them in the back of the shop, and sell them in the front. I also just bought the Mountain Hardware mens kilt for hiking - haven't used it yet though, but I love the kilt.

Just an FYI that Purple Rain is offering free shipping on her skirts thru the end of the year: https://www.etsy.com/shop/purplerainskirts
Also, she's got a proto-type for a wrap skirt for dudes which I wore on a few overnighters here. Looking good. Not sure when it'll be up on the site, but hopefully before the free shipping ends. Would be ideal for the AT mid-atlantic!

If you buy a wrap around skirt make sure you buy it a size large enough for sufficient overlap, NOT by your waist size.

Here is a webpage of skort styles. http://m.athleta.gap.com/category.html?search=skort

One style looks a little like a short kilt.

I'm a loyal customer of Purple Rain Adventure Skirts but have to buy a kilt. Has anyone tried a hiking kilt from Sport Kilt?
