I should probably finish the PCT first.... Not quite halfway yet!

Tahoe is the psychological halfway point. For many hikers, it takes about the same amount of time to get to Tahoe as it does to get to Canada from there. I told myself that if I walked out of S. Lake Tahoe, I was going to make it all the way to Canada. A surprisingly large number of hikers drop out there now that they have finished the Sierra Nevada. I personally loved the area around Tahoe. So much that I'll be traveling up to Tahoe on Thursday to hike to Tahoe Rim Trail.

Best wishes on finishing the trail. Just after the halfway point, the trail through Lassen Volcanic NP is kind of boring as it misses many of the park's best features. Consider taking an extra half a day to branch out from the PCT to see Hell's Kitchen near Drakesbad, the Painted Lava fields and Cinder Cone. You are already a month ahead of me when I hiked so don't be afraid of a few short side trips.

it funny, Echo Lake was exactly the halfway point duration wise on my hike.

    10k,
its sounding like you are having a blast. You are going to find that there are multiple high points as you head north. I found WA to be incredibly nice. I will be heading back up there in the fall to hike the Wonderland Trail, can't wait.

What's the snow level like this yr on the TRT on the west side(facing east(the PCT)) and atop Mt Rose? Good recs by Miner, IMHO too. The PCT misses the best of Lassen NP! The PCT misses the best of MT Rainier NP too! Be mindful of water especially water caches along Hat Creek Rim. STOP by the LAVA TUBE taking the short side SIGNED side trail and walk through. Bring your headlamp! There are water fountains at the Lava Tube. Tank up! Drakesbad allows hikers to stop by for a meal. TAKE ADVANTAGE! The food is usually pretty good.

He's ahead of me too. I got to S. Lake Tahoe July 2 and stayed two nights in a CG catching the fireworks they light off from a raft on Lake Tahoe July 4th. About a dozen PCTers and myself had a GREAT front row seat on the beach in S. Lake Tahoe on the lake to watch the fireworks. Caught a casino buffet the night before. Flew to the Canadian Border from here.

I'm at the Apex Inn - were you at the campground just before the Y?

    Reported TRT Current Conditions: http://www.tahoerimtrail.org/index.p...94&Itemid=1226
Though their reports of snow along the joint PCT/TRT section are from 10 days ago and I'm sure there has been a lot of melting since then.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience 10K. My view is you've been a hiking machine for years step by step. Must admit i do feel some envy. Good things come to good people. kinda wondering what u had in the 10 day food bag?

YUP. Shared a sight with a few other PCTers which the CG Host then let us take up multiple sights for no added fee. I think I spent $5 for two nights total. It was a spontaneous decision to do overnights at S. Lake Tahoe.

    I'm so jealous!

I just got back from a 7-day trip from Horseshoe Meadows to Bishop Pass. I kept thinking an awesome way to do the Sierra part would be to take every resupply exit so you could see everything and make it all last longer. Of course you'd never do that as a thru-hiker!

Enjoy Northern California. It's the best!
Some knew me as Piper, others as just Diane.
I hiked the PCT: Mexico to Mt. Shasta, 2008. Santa Barbara to Canada, 2009.

I'm sure many are envious of your recent 7 day hike. I've never heard anyone say what I have always thought. I'm not sure if I've done every possible way out but I've done quite a few. Everyone was scenic and had me pinching myself that I could be so fortunate. Of course, I didn't do all those different resupply ins/outs on one hike or in the spring with deep snow.

Just got to Belden by way of the Buck Lake alternate. Hard to believe I'm almost halfway.

If no one else is staying in it and if you want a nap ask if Belden Resort will allow you to hang out/overnight in the Teepee on the river which they sometimes offer to hikers. I slept in it.

I was in and out of Belden in a few hours. Took a nap and a shower at Little Haven and split. Currently camped 3.5 miles from the hwy into Chester. May take a zero there if the vibe is right. Big deal of the day was the midpoint monument.!

Have fun in the swamp right before the road into Chester. Maybe this year it will be drier but it was a mucky mess in '11
