    Default Gear list

Please comment on my gear list for 4 days 3 nights in the smokies coming up this Sunday(Oct. 12), Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

Do you guys carry 10 essentials as a separate emergency kit or do you just be sure to include them in your overall gear list.
    Thanks,

The full details of your gear list are not important... as most of it plays into your comfort level (i.e. a balance between taking more for things to have more things, and taking fewer things to have less weight).

The only thing that is important is are you ready to face the conditions you are likely to encounter?

You're talking about hiking the GSMNP in the fall. Rain is in the forecast, along with some temperatures as low as the 30's. You've got rain gear. That's a start. But are you also prepared to ensure your warm cloths and sleeping bag will stay dry even if it rains? You don't want to be 15 miles in the back country, with all your gear soaking wet with no way to get yourself dry and warm.

Beyond that, I would say that at first glance, you are likely carrying more than you will need.
IPhone - Isn't going to work in most places in the back country
Pack Liner AND Pack Cover AND umbrella - Seems a bit like wearing suspenders with a belt
Bug repellant and Head Net - Weather is turning cold... not very many bugs to worry about (except perhaps at lower elevations).
Sleeping pad AND under quilt - Temps are still warm enough that a thermarest pad by-itself is enough to insulate you from the ground.
Sawyer Plunger - You're only going out three nights... unless you're filtering all the water for a big group, just wait and back flush at home.
Sun Block - It's fall, so the sun is lower in the sky, and most of the time you're under trees. You can likely completely do without any sunblock (unless you're ultra sensitive) or bring 1oz or less in case you find yourself out on a ridge or enjoying a mountain top for long periods of time.

Too much clothing - You've got a sleeping bag, multiple head coverings, gloves, multiple jackets, rain cloths, base layers, and sleeping cloths.
By example, I too am soon heading out to the GSMNP for a two night trip... I'm taking:
32º Sleeping bag, wool cap, rain jacket, rain pants, light weight down jacket, one change of cloths (i.e. nylon t-shirt, shorts, underwear, socks w/liners x2) and an extra pair of socks. I'm usually comfortable sleeping in just the t-shirt and shorts, so I usually try to keep one set dry that I sleep in, and another set that I hike in (because even in this cool weather, I'm going to be sweating).

I've never been happy with the term "10 essentials" as all the lists are different and usually there are essential items not the list and things on the list that may not really be essential. What I do is to have a quart sized zip lock bag that has all those little things that you probably need or want to have, but won't necessarily use every day or need to keep at your fingertips. It goes in the bottom of the pack and I dig it out when necessary. I call it my BUMMER bag which is an acronym for Back Up, Medicine, Maintenance, Emergency, Repair. Little things that fit this description go in here. What you put in there is up to you.

Thanks for the reply. Notice the column that shows quantities of item. I'm not taking all of list.
