Default Shenandoah national park AT trail

If I wanted to do the AT trail through Shenandoah national park area which I believe is about a 100 mile hike. What is the name of the staring point to the south and what is the name of the finish point to the north.

i apologize in advance if this seems like a silly question but I am a newbie to the AT and would like some guidance. Thank you all for any input. Thanks

Thanks. July. Lone wolf told me the stopping point is in compon gap which I assume is plus minus 100 miles north from rock fish (starting point). I cannot locate it on my map. Does Compton gap go by another name?

Front Royal is at the northern end. see the map on the web site:http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/index.htm

Compton gap is 10 miles south of the front Royal entrance.

The North end of the park is near Front Royal, compton gap is bout mile 959.8 AT mile where you can get your permit to hike if going south, or exit the park if going north. You might need to pick up AWOL or ALDHA guide, lots of info not only bout the trail but surroundings also.

Thank you July. I will be hiking with a friend from south to north. Do they offer any pay shuttles back to rock fish from front royal / compton? Or should I plan on taking two vehicles

You might try Buddy Johnson 540-464-1281/540-817-9168,but be sure to give him some lead time, if he can't can probably shoot you in the right direction. You always have a list on the ATC website also to refer to also.

Hey all just want to say thanks for all of the info. I have purchased several books on the AT (not the through hikers guide yet) and honestly I have received more help here in 20 mins than all three books put together. Hats off to all you trail veterans. My dream come true is on the horizon

If exiting the AT at Compton Gap, consider taking the Dickey Ridge blue blazed trail down to Front Royal. About 10 miles.

If all you want to do is hike the SNP portion you can end at the Northern VA 4-H center. Just past the park boundary there's a blue blazed trail that takes you to the center near their swimming pool. They will also let you leave a vehicle there so if you are using 2 cars that's what I would do.

Compton Gap is the last AT crossing of Skyline Drive inside the park. Then you have the 4H camp (30day parking). US 522-Front Royal is the next major road crossing. Then VA 55/I 66-Linden (not much around).

Tom Floyd Wayside is the first major landmark north of the park boundary.
