Question Sub-2 Pound, 30 Degree Sleeping Bag Under 200$

    Hello,
I'm trying to get the base weight of my pack down. The next thing on the list is the sleeping bag. Do you guys have any recommendations for a Sub-2 Pound, 30 Degree down Sleeping Bag Under 200$. I am looking at the Mountain Equipment Helium 400 Sleeping Bag but there is not much info on it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Trent

Lots of black Friday sales that will stretch $. Peruse back country.com. I see marmot alpha for 194 shipped.

If you intend to use a sleeping pad, you might consider a top quilt.

    Here are two:

A quick search on Sierra Trading Post revealed the Brooks Range Alpini 30* bag. They're asking $270 but with the coupons they spew out daily you can knock 30-40% off any time. This morning's coupon was 35% and .99 shipping over $75, making the bag $176.46 (shipped).

No personal experience with the brand but found this review with a Google search.

Here's the link to STP's page.

Walmart of all places has a 30* down bag for $80 and is right around 2 pounds.

You get what you pay for. I wouldn't skimp on sleeping bag.

I would suggest that whatever bag you buy the temperature rating should be based on the EN13537 standard. All the good quality bags use this standard for ratings. I don't believe the Walmart bag is based on that standard.

Remember that the less expensive bags may SAY their rating is 30 degrees, but when you're in the back country in 28 degree weather (or less) with snow/rain, and your bag is really holding at 40 degrees, are you going to be happy? Ratings are just soooo wrong most of the time. Go with a reliable company and get a good bag. Better to do that than to have to buy two bags - one cheap one for the experience and a better one for the comfort.
