Today (December 22) is the longest day of the year - 24 hours 00 minutes 19.9 seconds. The shortest day is September 19, at 23 hours 59 minutes 38.7 seconds. (Wikipedia has more.) 24 hours is just the average over the whole year, and it's a little bit off. They add leap seconds every once in a while to adjust it.
The shift in the solar day length is why the earliest Northern Hemisphere sunset comes a couple of weeks before the solstice and the latest sunrise a couple of weeks after.
