Too many Colorado Trail Waypoints for my Etrex 30 GPS

I got a GPS file from Bearcreek for the Colorado Trail. It totals around 1200 waypoints. My GPS only stores 1000. How do I get around this? Is there a way to download these waypoints in a different way? Such as Point of Interest? I'm clueless on what to do. I'm planning on hiking the CT this summer & would like this data on my GPS. I'm using Easy GPS as my program.

Can you delete 200 of them? just chose a known easy to follow section where you mostly likely won't need it perhaps leave a few points here and there in the easy to follow sections for backup.

Other then that get a new GPS or use your smartphone for those other sections.

Yeah, Carl, just open the GPS file in a text editor and have at it. If you cannot easily do it, holler and I'll do it for you in TOPO (probably easier as this is done graphically). See you in the summer I any case! (AKA holler for another ride if the timing works)

I think you download a software to your PC for editing waypoints.

This will enable you to more easily make your own lists to share online.

instead of using the waypoints file, download and load into your GPS the POI file. Garmins can load a truck load of POI points. Go to the Bear Creek site and click on the below link to find some tutorials......I have loaded on my Etrex20 all of the points for the PCT, CDT and AT as POI files.

WOOOOOPSSSS! I see that Bear Creek does not have a POI file for the Colorado Trail. Garmin has a POI create software and loading tool. I can send you a POI file via an e-mail attachment. Just contact me with a private message. (click on my name: StarMan)

I downloaded easygps. I then downloaded the waypoints of the CT into the program. I couldn't see how to convert the waypoints (limited in number in the gps) into points of interest (basically unlimited as I understand it).

Starman is going to send me some files & walk me through the procedure. I'm just short of a #2 pencil, Big Chief Tablet kind of guy.

Your etrex should have come with MapSource software if so you should be able to use that to do interpolation from 1200 to 1000 points.

Got it fixed. I mailed Starman my micro SD card, he loaded all the points of the CT as POIs, and added topo maps to CO, TX, and AZ. When I got the card back, he talked me through how to configure my GPS to work. I'm ready to rock. Thanks a lot, Starman!!!

Yeah, POI or making them Geocaches are how I get around the 1000 waypoint limit. If you have issues loading the entire track of the Colorado trail you can convert the track(s) to a .img file using GPX2IMG and then put the .img file on an microSD card or (since the .img file is so small) internal memory.

If the trails you are interested in are marked on OpenStreetMap.org then you can download a section (or sections) that cover these trails and put them on your eTrex 30. See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/O...armin/Download for more information on coverage. Personally, I use http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/g...t/kml/kml.html to get the maps I need. Once you copy the map file to your eTrex memory card under /Garmin directory you will need to enable the map - to do so in map view click on left (menu) button and go to Setup Map -> Select Map item which will allow you to enable/disable different maps that you might have installed on your gps.

If you use a smartphone I highly recommend the Guthook apps. I used the PCT app currently use the AT app - they are very accurate and have a lot of information. About 1000 times easier than fiddling with a GPS.
