Airplane Mode GPS APP question?
If I take my Android Galaxy S4 and leave it on Airplane mode.......Is there an APP So I can use my phone as a Topo and or Satellite map GPS rout finder!?????

Just go to settings and turn off wireless, bluetooth and mobile networks but leave on gps. Then you can use any app you want.
i use mapswithme. traveled all over the world in airplane mode with the gps on. works fine.
download the app and then download the country or state information for wherever you're going. even has the trail on it.
(i also have an s4)

I use Backcountry Navigator for that. Works pretty well, and I'm tooled up to do my own maps for it. You can download the maps for an area in advance so that you don't need any sort of network connection while you're on the move.
I always know where I am. I'm right here.

Just to note continuous GPS is one of the largest power drains you can do with the phone. How I used it was turn airplane mode off, use GPS app to get my location, then turn airplane mode back on.
I use an app called "share my position", and it prompts to turn on the GPS. Then I have to manually turn it off. I haven't tried it in airplane mode though, it may choke on not having access to SMS.
With Android you can leave it in Airplane mode. When you access Backcountry Navigator or Google Maps it turns on the GPS. Look for the maps pin in the Notification bar. When you exit the pin should be removed, otherwise the GPS is still on.
+1 for Backcountry Navigator. I used it on my JMT Thru last summer. As said, download the maps ahead of time and keep it in airplane mode. Turn your GPS on only long enough to fix your position, and then it off again.

there are options for what map to download. what mapset did you guys use?

Cal topics is the best option at this time. On my 2011 thru hike I used a different option that's no longer available. I've used the Cal topics on various hikes an I think it's great. If I come into a town that has internet connectivity I prefer Google maps as the topic maps are not really good for viewing towns and highways. So my solution is to cache Google maps for towns and highways and BC Navigator for hiking.
