I am trying to figure out if I want to get a short cut, or just pull it up. Which is the easiest way to wear your hair while thru hiking? Give me the pros and cons!

I usually cut my hair short when doing a long hike. It's cool and easy to care for.
Mine is long, two pigtails for hiking. I hike about 2 months a year, don't want to change my look for the other 8 months.
You could start out with it long and then decide to cut it short later if your still out there and it's getting hot out. If it's long enough, donate your hair when you do it. In the long run, your better off with it short.

Short's easy, Long is pretty.
Double pigtail is the best choice with long hair.
You can always chop it as said if it's a PIA.
The only thing that sucks is in the middle, nothing worse than that in between stage when it bugs you but you can't put it up.
I pull my long hair thru the opening at the back of a baseball cap.
I saw a jogger do that. I like it: holds my hair together. Looks nice.
I tend to let mine grow when not out hiking. When hiking, it gets cut with a #2 guard all over. Convenient as hell for day to day personal cleanliness.
Personally,
I like it either long enough to braid or put in a pigtail....
OR
Short enough that it is not in my face and covering my neck.
Either way - short or long is fine.... but not in between!
In hot weather, long hair can be wetted down and balled up under a cap to keep your head cool all day.
If the ticks are out you'll wish it was short.
"Your comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there."
Ugh. I didn't think about ticks! I am thinking I will probably start with long hair then cut it short as it warms up and the critters get active. I generally ponytail it through the ball cap or twist it up and clip it, but this will be my first thru hike. To be honest, I haven't had to deal much with ticks until my move to Oklahoma this last year.
I treat my ball cap with permethrin, two pig tails works better than a ponytail. Ponytail hair gets caught under my shoulder straps.
I have long hair and I'm going to keep my long hair. Braids, braids, braids!
Short hair is easy. But long hair in a pony tail will get you a faster pick up when hitch hiking every time. And not from creepy men, but usually from women who are appalled at the danger of a woman trying to hitch a ride. And, wrong or right, people in general would rather stop to help a woman than a man. Not trying to start an argument here, just relating what I have experienced in my hikes.
I'm male, haven't had long hair for decades. My last haircut was several months ago. My hair now blows in the wind, a nice sensual feeling. Maybe I'll have a ponytail by the end of the trip. Or maybe I'll decide to buzzcut my head and face.
I've had the same question! I've never had hair as short as would be comfortable for a summer hike. I've decided to keep mine long as much as it will annoy me...and I know this.
Pigtails or two braids work well for me. Treating your hat is a great idea! Thanks all!
I prefer my hair either really short ( #2 all around ) or surfer long. I find either one to be easy and low maintenance. Hair in between generally looks goofy if you don't style it.
