I met up with them on Saturday and ran for 10 miles. Had a chance to talk to Scott and he seemed to be in good spirits and really focused. It's good to see. Others said he looks rough, but beyond the dirt and smell of thru, he ran strong. Took it easy on the ups and pick up the pace on easy down hills and flats. I ended up doing a total of 20 miles over fairly pedestrian terrain and I felt it the next day - can't imagine doing 50 a day. Ended up talking to Karl Meltzer a lot and letting Scott focus.

As far as food goes, I think you may need to contact his support team ahead of time. He ate vegan chocolate/energy bites, whole wheat muffins and perogies during the time I was with the group - people he knew were dropping off items though.

Last night's stop seemed to be Stratton Arlington Rd (47.3 mile day, 1633.6 overall). Tonight expect someplace near the Rutland Airport (several road crossing to choose from).

Ok, you got me, Lone Wolf! I didn't see who posted that until after I replied. I have been following Scott's progress closely and continue to be amazed. But the double whammy of fatigue plus the Whites still makes me a doubter.

He passed "Those Flippin' Milanders" @ around 10:30 am today @ about NOBO mile 1646.2 (just north of the William B. Douglas shelter). Seemed to be in good spirits...and still great shape. He even got a little laugh when I almost got toppled by a sneaky rock while taking off to run with him a bit. Guess my trail name should change to "That Trippin' Milander" :-p

I was just looking at the 3 day forecast for Scott. Right now, it looks like he will be getting a real taste of cold, wind, rain when he is on/near Mt. Washington. Hope I'm wrong.

He has had a weakness for mcdonalds chicken nuggets in past. You might tempt him off the wagon.

He passed us on Phelps Ave in North Adams on Sunday about 9am (north ofWilliams). Looked strong and in good spirits. Shared a few jokes with the crew setting the new trail kiosk.

Route 103 it was tonight. I see him near NH tomorrow night - maybe West Hartford, VT, maybe Norwich, or if he's feeling great, the far east side of downtown Hanover.

If he gets all the way to Hanover east side, he could then hike to Kinsman Notch next day, then he could go crazy and do a super-long to Washington's summit, followed by a shorter couple days to Gorham and Grafton Notch. That self-brutalization, if he has it in him at this point, would shave off a day from the itineraries discussed above. He could then cruise along somewhat, not needing to push it in western Maine, until past the Bigelows, where he could turn the jets on again. If everything goes perfectly and he's able, he could, in theory, push toward the 43-44 day range. Seems unlikely. Something between 44 and 18 hours and 47.25 seems more likely.

MapMan, Odd Man Out, other cartographers/dataphiles: you have postulated a trek from Gorham to the road crossing past the Kennebec of 35ish per day. Can you remind us what Jen did over that stretch, and on to Katahdin summit? It's clear that she and Scott are comparables, so her pace for the trail remaining for Scott is a good rough estimate for his capability, understanding that some kind of ultra marathon from him to close out is something to factor in.
    The more miles, the merrier!

    Day 35 (June 30): VT 12 -- 41.1 miles (1724.6 total) [+13.7 to JPD]

Driver8, JPD did 35 miles per day in the six days between Stratton ME and Glencliff NH. I still think a good goal for him two days from now is to end up 97 miles down the trail at NH 25A -- Wentworth NH (hiking today to either Cloudland Road or Joe Ranger Road, 46.6 miles or 50.4 miles). Then he would be set up to do Franconia Notch to Mt. Washington to Gorham, averaging 36.8 miles a day in the Whites and putting him an entire day ahead of JPD.

    Default Kinsman to Crawford

Even Kinsman to Crawford would be a serious push for anyone. If he did pull that off he could have an easy day to Pinkham the next day, to Carlo Col (overnight on trail), to 17 (Ouch!) to Caribou Valley to as close to the Kennebec as possible to...

I figured it out last night but don't have it all here at work. I came up with a couple plans but both of them would have him spending one night out.

I'm heading up to Baxter on Friday for a long weekend with my family. I really wish we had planned out trip a week later!

It's a good thing he didn't hit the Whites on Sunday. 80 MPH winds and heavy rain along the ridges. It was so bad the AMC canceled everyone's reservations for Sunday night and those who were already at the huts had to hunker down until it cleared up yesterday. Hitting a storm like that at the wrong time would have put an end to the whole deal.

Thankfully for him it's unlikely we'll have another storm like that in the next week, but showers and T-storms are in the forecast and with all the rivers already overflowing their banks, it could be a problem. But today is a nice day, cool and clear.

If we are comparing apples to apples, shouldn't Scott bypass the canoe ferry and ford the river (whose name escapes me at the moment) as Jennifer did?
    Just wondering.
