SOUTH LONDONDERRY — Hugh and Jeanne Joudry have been watching over Stratton Mountain for decades — first as fire spotters for the state in the 1970s, and now as summit stewards for the Green Mountain Club.
But upon making that familiar hike up Stratton earlier this month, they met a “rather dramatic” scene when they reached the top, Hugh said. The historic caretaker’s cabin they stay in for the hiking season to do trail maintenance and help hikers — a cabin built in 1928 to accompany the summit’s fire tower — had been broken into, its cedar front door smashed to pieces.
