A lot of folks use the SPOT device. It's about $150 (may be able to find a sale or two on it here and there though) and the annual subscription for satellite use is about $100 a year. It can track your position at whatever sample frequency you want, send pre-defined messages to people, like "I'm fine, staying the night here", and can be used to summon help if you have an accident.

SPOT Gen 3. Hardware is $150 but they are offering a $75 rebate (https://spot.rebateaccess.com/) with purchase of a service plan - which you'll need anyway.

If just looking for an app. I was using EveryTrail. I wanted something that would document my pics along my hikes. But it doesn't seem to supported by the newest version of Android. I am now looking at Ramblr. Very easy. Can add trail journaling.

I carry a SPOT Gen 3 as well.

But another option is the Delorme

I use an app called "Share my position", once in a while, when I can get a signal.

I use the Delorme InReach. There have been several recent threads that discuss the benefits of the various communication devices.

Good info here, and I am planning to get a SPOT Gen3, mainly for the family's peace of mind, and the fact it has an SOS function in case I get badly injured on the trail. Just remember it is a minimum of $15 a month, or you can pay $20 a month and change how often your account updates from just every 10 minutes to every 5, or 30 or every hour, if I remember correctly.

here is a pretty through review of the SPOT Gen3
