A 20-year-old man is being held on murder charges in Clay County for a possible homicide on the Pinhoti Trial in Cheaha Mountain State Park.
Sheriff Ray Latham announced in a news release that Loren Daniel Bunner, 20, of Vincent, is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on $150,000 bond.
Oxford police Capt. L.G. Owens said Bunner on Sunday called Calhoun County 911 from an area off exit 179 of Interstate 20, which is in Oxford police's jurisdiction. When authorities contacted Bunner, he told them he wanted to talk to someone about an incident involving his girlfriend, Owens said.
By 6 p.m., Clay County Sheriff's Office had been notified of a possible homicide on Pinhoti Trail in the Cheaha Mountain area near the state park, Latham said.
"Several agencies were on the scene due to the uncertainty of the location of the crime," Latham said. "Further investigation and the location of the crime scene showed that the crime had taken place in Clay County just off the Pinhoti Trail."
Authorities are not releasing any further information as the investigation continues.
Other agencies taking part were the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville State University Forensics, U.S. Forestry Agents, Cleburne County Search & Rescue and the Clay County Search & Rescue.
