I tried to sign up for one but it was full. But I found this video I thought was educational:

I work at REI and they're excellent classes. The size of the class is usually small so that everyone can benefit from instruction. Very interactive and very hands on. Plus if you're a member, you get a discount so it's totally worth it. You should check it out. They cover all the basics plus a little more. And if you're looking for more detailed instruction, you can always go into REI and ask an employee. They've been trained in all kinds of stuff and really know what they're talking about.

My husband and I actually took a compass reading class about a month and a half ago at REI in Brentwood, Tn. We are from North Alabama so it was a short drive. The class was full but well taught and extremely informative. There were handouts, and the instructor was great. At the end of it we went outside as a class to do some basic navigation. I was impressed, and felt very much worth the class fee. I had no prior experience brith compass reading/navigation. Hope this is helpful.

I love that store! They are hosting hikes in Shenandoah. I'm hoping to catch a few.

Check out local Orienteering clubs and events. Quantico perhaps? http://www.qocweb.org/events/2012/11...lls-md/results

I'm in Texas, but at every orienteering event for the NTOA (North Texas), AOC (Austin), HOC (Houston), there is always a 30 minute "beginners" course. And the White and Yellow courses are perfect for trail map and compass practice. Some clubs, state parks and such, have permanent O courses. Download the map for a park near you, go give it a try.
