    The Homeplace Restaurant.
Awesome Family style southern cooking. Fried chicken, roast beef, greens, mashed potatoes, etc. All you can eat for about 15-18 bucks. They even have a special hiker table for us stinker clientele. Its about 2.5 of miles off trail from the VA 785 crossing but well worth it.

Inn at Long Trail (before trail relo)
Can't remember the food, but it was fun sitting down for dinner with the brothers at Graymoor when they hosted hikers in the dorm rooms
Lobster roll at Pine Tree Frosty in Rangeley
First time trying biscuits and gravy at a restaurant in Dahlonega.

As an attempt to dissuade backpackers and thruhikers from glomming onto towns and exchanging folding money and dealing with commerce on a regular basis; and to keep them longer in the woods without town interruptions---I offer this concept of the Best Restaurant on the AT---Their own kitchen and stove and pot while on the trail. What better place to eat?

    Better than a restaurant!!

    Baked tofu with broccoli.

Raw goat cheese with fresh red apple.

    More eggs!!

    Ramps fried in butter.

    Lon & Theresa's, Hampton, TN.

After pulling nearly 80 miles in 4 days from Erwin, I cowboy camped next to the side trail into Hampton, then walked in for breakfast, a zero to replenish my calorie deficiency, and had to get another breakfast at Lon & Theresa's before heading back to the trail.

Biscuits & gravy, bacon, eggs & ice cold milk. And after not having milk since I began my thru hike, the milk at Lon & Theresa's tasted like the best milk ever.

For me this is no contest: South Mountain Inn in Maryland. They sat us downwind of the regular clientele and I had veal saltimboca which was absolutely fantastic. Of course that was before I went vegan.

Honorable mention to the Inn at Long Trail (a memorable Spanish omelette for breakfast) and the Home Place.

The Mountain Harbor breakfast was to die for. Really impressive.

I really liked the food @ the Dutch Haus B&B/Hostel.

I crushed the Ming Dynasty in Waynesbory, VA. Don't recall if it tasted good or not. All I know is I couldn't stop eating.

I had 3 pizzas delivered to 3 different shelters. Each one tasted wonderful. It's amazing how your appetite goes nuts on the trail.

I was hiking with a few people when we came to Montebello, VA & they all made reservations at the Dutch Haus. I was planning to hike on, when they made an arrangement to have me crash in one of their rooms for no additionally charge.

I remember being amazed at the quality of care Lois provided. The food was great and the place was damn impressive. I forgot about that one until reading your post.

I remember thinking to myself Ming Dynasty may lose money on thru-hikers. I was there with around 15 hikers and the amount of food consumed was absurd. Waynesboro was an awesome trail town, looking forward to being back down there this week!

At NOC, in Wesser, NC, they have a small river side grill. Used to be called Slow Joes, but they have since changed it. Their sandwiches and dogs are great, especially with the cold beer!

+1 for the Doyle! If I lived nearby, I'd be a regular there. Pat cuts no corners in the kitchen, and you get great value for money. Vicki keeps a kind eye on your alcohol intake, which you'll appreciate come hiking time the next morning.

I also had fantastic dinner and breakfast at the Three Springs Hostel in VA (included in the overnight rate). Oma, the owner, gives a lot of thought to the nutrients you don't normally get on the trail. She uses quality ingredients and is generous with the portions.

If you have completed the AT and didn't eat at The Homeplace, you ****ed up.

And Re: The Cabin, yeah I do know what you're talking about, only place to get proper Biscuits and Gravy in the yankee part of the trail.

Mountain Harbour for a class act and fine food.
Woods Hole for funky rustic home cooking.

The best eatery on or near the trail is the one you're in at the time.

One further note on the Homeplace in Catawba VA, if you stay at the four pines Hostel, on Thursdays, he'll run everyone staying to the restaurant no charge.

What hasn't been said yet about the Homeplace, is you sit down family style, and they bring bowls of fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, then ice cream. Then they keep bringing it if you can keep eating it. Truly AYCE. Amazing. My bill was $14.

Best restaurant meal actually on (or really close to the Trail)........the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon.

Best meal in a Trail town, i.e a place frequented by hikers......there's the Ming Garden in Waynesboro and then there's everywhere else.
