Nice looking pack! Love the colors.

You're an idiot...
Two more pics later and you would have found the brunette version which includes the girl. Though carrying a girl with a pack on is a rough way to go.
What's fun these days is how everyone is blending together, the old school/new school and heavy/light line is blurring pretty hard.
Maybe there's some humor buried somewhere in this... can't find it... but what does a question about a UL pack lid have to do with an 8 pound pack, like the DD Terraplane? (I used one for many years myself... great old-school pack, took it all the way up Denali, but to this day I wonder why, given some 5 lb expedition packs out there, equally capable....)
Anyway, I rigged up a 2-ounce "brain" to my ULA Ohm 2.0 for a while, sure, the organization is nice. But I stopped using it and now just use a 1.7 ounce Granite Gear zip-sack that holds more and I just put it in the top of my ULA Ohm and use that to hold anything that used to go in a lid, plus some. It takes 0.5 seconds to open it, vs. 0.25 seconds to open a lid. I can live with the extra 1/4 second for simplicity and a streamlined pack.
The brunette version is my desktop wallpaper. A Geezer can dream, right?
Right tools for the job, hey. Form follows function. My hero, Tipi Walter, travels as light as possible for his 21 day winter trips. SUL, UL, Lightweight. It's all relative.

Check out Paradox packs. They make two different style frames and various size pack bags that fit either frame. They also make very functional top lids and talons.

I try to avoid Gear Porn sites online. Obviously, I'm not always successful.
Rob, back in '94 I must have gotten the UL version of the Terraplane. Mine only weighs 6 pounds 12 ounces. An even 6 pounds without the top pocket/lid. One of these days I'm going to take it out and play in the snow. With winter gear & snowshoes I'll appreciate the ability to make a heavy load almost tolerable.

But yar, 3lbs to haul 50 (well) is impressive. Though no old timer it isn't hard to recollect needing 6-8lb packs to do the same.
Maybe I had the Astraplane? Slightly larger model? I remember high-7's in weight, like 7-14 or so. I sold it a couple years ago to a buddy, who then used it on Denali (I used a 5-pound Osprey Aether 85 for that trip). Yes, UL is very relative. I started with 120 pounds on my first Denali climb. the second one, I was down to 92 (BTW: about half this weight is carried on a sled we drug behind ourselves). For 3 weeks of food and fuel and a lot of extreme cold and climbing gear, I consider that UL!
I figured you had the Astalplane.
My hat is off to you! Well done! Denali is one place you don't want to skimp on lifesaving gear.

Do they sell this pack in Redhead?
My search for an UL pack with a brain has led me on some interesting reading on the internet along with a few trips to EMS, REI, and some yuppy Main Line stores that call themselves "outdoor" but are really just trendy clothing stores.
I tried on every pack at REI and EMS and found myself gravitating back to two Gregory packs: Z55 and Contour 50. Yes, definitely heavier, but what great suspension systems Gregory makes. I am considering going heavier with a Gregory but haven't made my mind up yet.
I have a Osprey Talon 44, which I like, but I found myself being annoyed with other Osprey packs. Most notably their stretchy mesh pockets, which seem to get real tight when the pack is loaded. I like my mesh fabric more loose in order to stuff things. I also considered the Exos 48 or 58 but they lack any creative outside storage organization and is set up like my Kalais (except has the top brain). I really like pockets, side zip entrance, etc.
I'm beginning to think going with a Gregory might be a good thing.
Zimmerbuilt, get it built the way you want it.
I have a Osprey Hornet 46 it has a brain and frame sheet. The weight is 1 pound 8 ounces. I love it and have used it on 20 plus days on the trail.

I don't really consider it a brain, but the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 is a great lightweight pack with a top access pocket.
