Starting point for flip Flop for July 1 start.
Going Nobo starting July 1. Thinking of Harpers Ferry. Average hiker. Thoughts?
July 1 ? Maybe start farther north New York City maybe. There is even an AT train stop.
I'd start further north if it were me. Massachusetts, probably. That way you get summer in New England - best time to be there - and flip back south around the beginning of September, getting to Harper's around the end of the month and spending October and November in the South.
PA in July can be pretty brutal. The ideas above sound better. Plus, when you flip flop and start SoBo, PA will be really nice in September and you'll get the rocks knocked out in the first half of the state.
Definitely start somewhere in Mass. You'll be less likely to die of heat stroke that way.
I did NJ/NY during an 11 day heatwave in July once, it was really brutal. At least in NJ/NY there are fairly frequent ponds to take a dip in.There's nothing like that in PA. Just a long, dry, hot hike stumbling over rocks.

Since you live in NY you have more options than many of the rest of us would have.
Agree on Massachusetts . Start on Mt. Greylock ,the highest peak in the state.
Getting lost is a way to find yourself.
Just a thought, but why not hike SOBO? July is a great time for hiking in maine.

It shouldn't be hard to get there to start northward (you're only talking a couple hours max driving (being driven), basically 23 over to 22 and then south on 22, so easy directions for the driver).
The train stop is just off of Route 22 so it would be a very short walk there and back to 22 to start heading North.
Then, once you reach Maine, getting transportation into NYC would be an easy destination, and then the train back up to that stop to start heading South.
Alternatively, you could pick anywhere in NY that is close to a Metro North station and get the same options.
