im ready for all the ridicule to be heaped on me. i can handle it. but please, somebody...tell me how these damn gaiters go on! iui got a pair of rei desert gaiters for christmas and have one the most basic idea. on the elbows....right?

Yeah, they are a pain.

You have a tube with a velcro strip down the middle. The small stretchy end of the tube wraps around your ankle, or thereabouts. The wider end wraps around the top of your shoe, velcro facing forward, and there is a hook to attach to your shoe laces so it doesn't ride up.The thin cord is used to tie underneath your shoe to secure it.

I guess this fits under hike your own hike. I use tall gaiters when I hike and do not carry long pants or rain pants. I have a pair of REIs Desert Gaiter that I use with low top running shoes or trail runners. They are great for keeping junk out of your shoes.
