    Default (un)Packing Fears ~ Hunting

Are there sections of the trail where hunting occurs?

Do I need to wear a blaze orange hat or paint myself orange?

Planning on leaving April 1, 2024 NOBO.

Wear a blaze orange cap or beanie during hunting seasons. The ATC sells a beanie.

Many AT sections in many states. My personal rule is to show orange from mid-October to January since different game have different seasons.

People are in the woods shooting all year 'round.
Wearing safety orange or ANSI yellow is always a good idea.

If wearing blaze orange makes you feel better, by all means wear it but people are NOT blasting away in the woods year round. You are more at risk of being "injured" by lymes disease, hantavirus or giardia than a stray round from a hunter. Relax, save the weight and enjoy the hike.

Might be advisable to take this along, also:

I always wear animal skins to blend in better so the hunters don’t see me.

If starting the trail from Springer on April 1st it will be Turkey Season for most of the month through Tennessee, NC, and Virginia. I ran into several turkey hunters during my hike and no problems.
