Sad to hear of these tragedies but sometimes I think you just have to know your limits. Hiking and backpacking is my passion but during the winter months even here in western NC I often choose the safest option and stay at home. I don't want to put my own life at risk nor any rescue people that risk their own lives to help others. Hike safe, be smart and don't put yourself in an unsafe predicament to be the next hiker/backpacker that we read about this happening to on this blog or your local news.
