Ha, all this talk about brews has gotten me thirsty. Looks to me like I won't be the only one making sure that there is a supply of booze in my pack at all times. There is nothing like sacrificing water to carry that extra liter of alcohol. Except when you take a sip from what you think is water but turns out to be Vodka. Anyone else have this happen to them? What are your favorite alcoholic drinks while backpacking?

I was so bummed I never got to try moonshine. Next time.

Did that "alcoholic's guide to the AT" ever get published? If not, one of you 2007 hikers should take it upon yourselves to write one! I'd love to read it.

Actually, that stuff LW gets is way tastier than the rubbing alcohol they make up here. Vanilla and cinnamon was a nice touch, too. Halloweeny.

Lone Wolf, if I do go to PA Ruck, the only reason -- and I mean the ONLY -- will be to try your southern version of rubbing alcohol! I hope to pull it off!

Dawn, maybe you can do a new patch based on something like drinking a microbrew from each state along the AT, with a focus on microbrews from as close to the trail as possible... I guess you could call it 'brew-blazing'....LOL

Don't forget to stop off at Helen Ga. on yer way north, it is a wonderful little Bavarian town right off the trail, just like walking into Germany, has plenty of beer to sample too !

I'm not sure how many of you guys use an alcohola stove, but Everclear and even down to Vodka work perfect for fuel as well as post hiking refreshments. I have never had a problem even burning rubbing alcohol. I have never gotten to try moonshine but I imagine it tastes much like the other grain alcohols that I have had, crappy but gets you drunk...

Where you gettin` your shine at son ? What I taste goes down like water and has no resemblance to rubbing alchohol, more like "spring water" pronounced with a british accent "sprinng watta" ;-) and gets ya drunker than anything you can buy in any store . I dont think I`d be wastin` any of it in a stove either lessen it was an emergency !

This sounds like a great idea!! I was wondering myself which bars along the way are good to stop at. I collect beer caps. If anyone has any cool micro brews around where they live and want to send me caps that would awesome! By the way... is there an unoffical beer of the AT?

This is hardly an original idea. After hiking the trail even a few states you quickly realize this is exactly what a majority of thruhikers do. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, in fact it is what I do also. I'm just saying most thruhikes are beer tours.

Talking east coast beer tour "01"

i'm not sure anyone will match brett and andy (ga>me "01") for their beer tour. those guys hiked into the night to make it to the bar, hiked from the bar back to the trail when it closed. and even claimed to have done "negative" miles hiked back down the trail cause they missed the long trail brewery!!!! those guys could tear up the trail!!! they were always soaked with sweat and stunk to high heaven!!!!!!
