"Fantastic doctrines (like Christianity or Islam or Marxism) require unanimity of belief."
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Yeah. All Christians believe the same thing. That's why there is only one church in every town
Funny

I think he was being sarcastic, LW
I thought ti was funny that little Cades Cove in GSMNP orignally had one Methodist and one Baptist church.
But there can never be any such thing as one Baptist church. The Baptist congregation got into a fight over doctrine and split, thus restoring balance to the universe and giving the Cove 3 churches.

I live near Cades Cove - there are more different kinds of Baptists here than I could begin to count. They get into a fight and half the congregation runs offf to start a new church... and then they both get into a fight and start a new church... they grow expotentially.
The lack of any sort of formal training needed to become a Baptist minister seems to promote this. If a man (they don't allow women) feels called to preach and the church agrees, they can be ordained. So when problems happen in the church, most ministers have no idea how to minister - they are simply preachers - not pastors.
remember the line from "A River Runs Through It".
"Methodist are Baptist who can read"
I love that movie!

There are two Muslim centers in Blacksburg. Why? They both believe different things. The Unitarian Church doesn't even pretend to unanimity. It's a diverse world in which we live. Hurray!
