    Exclamation Gigging new hikers

ShakeyLeggs et al have been stealing Gatorgump’s thunder everywhere they can find a place to do so – the TV station blog that’s following his progress, his trail journal guest book & here. Observers are calling them out this way: "These humorless, churlish posters are lesson #1 in overcoming the psychological hurdles of long-distance hiking."

This excerpt from ShakeyLeggs' own trail journal indicates he ought to be out looking for a job instead of stalking an earnest hiker:
"Remember when I told you all about the difficulty I had with my last employer lieing to the state about me quiting and I had to defend myself? Well today is the day I have to file my biweekly claim for unemployment." [Shakey Leggs journal 4/15/2007]

Hickhiker, there is no glory in baring your bum on the Net. Several of us have praised GG for hiking after having serious health problems in both his TJ and the TV station blog. I personally would do whatever I can to help GG make it to the big K because even though he has behaved badly, he is part of our hiking family and we take care of our own. However, being part of the hiking family also means getting called out when other hikers feel your behavior is disrespectful toward the trail or endangers the reputation of the hiking community.

GatorGump putting his bare bum on the plaque at Springer mountain is akin to burning a flag or spitting on a cross to some members of the AT hiking community. It isn't cute; it isn't funny; it is as disrespectful as if he had placed his bare bum against the Vietnam Memorial, the 9/11 Memorial or the Statue of Liberty. I for one am glad Leif and ZipDrive (owners of Trail Journals) told him to remove the bare-bum photos from their site. I doubt the TV station would have allowed those to be posted on their site.

You seem to have a feeling that GG is being singled out for this treatment. Here is a link to another thread discussing unacceptable behavior on the part of a hiker and how the community dealt with it. He is also being treated normally at TrailJournals. Note Hiaku had to add the censored blackout over his lower torso to post his handstand in his kilt next to the Big K sign.

If GG feels it is so necessary for the world to see his bum, he needs to get his own website and post all the pics he wants. When he is posting on someone else's site, he needs to adhere to the rules and conventions on that site. Here is a link to the rules at TrailJournals and here is one of the rules:
    2. Immediate termination will occur if your site contains or links to any of the following: nudity, sex, pornography, foul language, hate propaganda, anything illegal, mail fraud or pyramid schemes. This includes anything considered adult material. (Emphasis added by this writer)

Note Leif and ZipDrive did not terminate his account, but just told him to remove the pics. If he decides to post more bare bum pics, I would have to support Lief and ZipDrive in telling him to blog elsewhere.

Question Worshipping at thine own altar?

How great thou art, F’ing Dino! Your ham-handed lessons on moral superiority are all over the ‘Net. Take a hike, gal.

"The journals are viewed by children. Also, putting your bare rump on the plaque at the southern terminus is not a tradition - the tradition is to kiss the plaque. Some of the hikers that were on Springer Mountain when you did that were startled /offended and many members of the hiking community feel the action was offensive. The bare-rump photo demonstrating how to defecate into a cat-hole was also offensive to many hikers. Neither photo belongs on a site viewed by children."

All the really nasty ones were deleted (hooray for great editing!) but one remains. "This resource is used by children writing reports about the AT and young future thru-hikers."

and YOU have no credibility here - you are obviously one who joined this website in an attempt to defend GG's lack of maturity and respect for the trail. Your first 4 posts are certainly not an attempt to become a part of the WB community - but have clearly defined who you are here, and why you have "joined" this website. It is you who should "take a hike".....

We here usually put the welcome sign out to new members....

I'm frankly not sure it's warranted in your case, given your behavior so far.....
Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

    Hickhiker,
You are way out of line. No need to get personal and ugly.

    Smile Hearty Welcome to HickHiker

Sounds like you don’t want new blood in the gene pool. And worse yet, your shame-on-you proselytizing must be contagious, because in reply to Austxs nasty message to "Go screw yourself," I’m feeling an overwhelming urge to quote Frolicking Dinosaur:

"This resource is used by children writing reports about the AT and young future thru-hikers."

Hanging out my own welcome sign for me...

Having met and talked to Dino, I'll have to say your opinions and comments couldn't be farther off.

If you do not have anything helpful to say or to positively contribute to WB, maybe you should take your ball and play somewhere else. Certain things this site can do without.

Probably should restrict your gene poll to it's one branch, nitwit.

HickHiker, I did not post any nasty messages at all. Too many to count - a grand total of three - one deleted that was essentially the same as the longer from the Tampa TV site.

I simply pointed out that GatorGump's activities do not have the approval of most serious hikers and requested he remove the bare-bum pics because they are inappropriate for younger viewers. I'm a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother - children are very important to me.

Thanks to fellow members for the defense of my reputation while I was at the doctor's office.

Hickhiker, I have been off the trail for a while. Perhaps you should check on reasons some of us might not be hiking as much these days. We are planning to try a hike with packs later on this month.
