    Default DIY Gearskin questions

Does the Gearskin have two layers of fabric, even in the heavier packcloth version?

Good point, never tried the mid weight. My son has my original pack cloth version and it is single layer.

Yeah, I figured the packcloth version would only need one layer since it's so thick.

Here's another question: what are the dimensions? I figure the length of one side is about a yard or so, but what about the width?

I don't know off the top of my head. I will try to remember to check that out when I get home.

Do the conpression straps go the fulll length of the fabric or are they just bartacked on the ends?

The compression straps are double stitched to the end of the fabrics.

The different sizes of gearskins have different dimensions. Mine is thinner and shorter than my boyfriends. I'll measure them tonight when I get them out.

Has anyone tried using lace and buttons like some of the old time boots instead of compression straps/buckles? The old boots with the row of buttons up the outside of the calf, looping the lace around the buttons with a half hitch, then pulling tight.

Then you'd have to unlace and relace the thing everytime you want to get into you pack wouldn't you?

No, the lace goes through a hole on the one side, but loops around a button on the other, you'd have to pull it tight, but you wouldn't have to unlace because the loops come off over the buttons while still being through the holes on the other side.
