I lost my first "trail dog" Peanut a couple of years ago to a brain tumor, we then got a mastiff who could care less about hiking (it's work lol).

So September of 2014 I got my little 7wk old Muppet from the local pound.

She was extremely sick with demodex for months but here she is at a year old (40lbs) and looking fantastic. She's my little buddy.

Here is a couple why stock dogs are the preferred trail breeds in MT and WY wilderness areas among outfitters. I'm training mine to whiz on AT dog-hate posters.

I'd MUCH rather look at dog pictures than baby photos!

Here's my boy, Cyrus, from a local rescue shelter at about 10 months of age, now 4 yrs old.

Two are border collies and one of the black/white ones (inside the tent and up with the mules) is a BC/Aussie cross rescue gal. The black/white gals have crossed over the great divide a couple of years ago and were simply incredible trail dogs that accompanied me everywhere on many adventures at work and at play for years. The tri-colored BC will be two this spring and is becoming the trail dog her predecessors were, sans the horses and mule duty since I have retired.

Hre's a recent one. I pretend I put the orange on because it's hunting season, but really it just makes her easier to see.

I photoshopped it out to incite debate in the dog forum.

German Wirehaired Pointer. I believe they're technically a breed of Muppet.

    Here's my furry best friend.

That last one was her creeping into one of my photos while I was taking it. She always improves them.

Double the trouble, double the fun! My buddies are sisters who love to get outdoors and enjoy life. It's too bad they always look like they aren't having a good time!

Not necessarily. The best dogs to scare away the bears are stock dogs, i.e. border collies, healers, aussies, and etc. They are fast and agile and know which end of the bear to work. That is one of the chief reasons most of the outfitters in the Yellowstone Ecosystem have stock dogs around camp.

However, now that the wolves are back it takes a good deal of care to make sure they aren't killed by wolves.

This is my best bud.... Dibbs. He was on the trail this year and conquered Blood Mountain. He enjoyed it but said "dad, that was hard and I just want to lounge around the house from now on". So here he is on the 4th of July this year.

Olive on Blood Mountain. She has been here many times and loves it. One of "Squirt's" favorite hikes!
