Default Longest thru, ever? it just started...

    From Blue Ridge outdoors Magazine:

Earth Expedition Starts in Georgia On Saturday Daren Wendell stepped away from North Georgia College and University in Dahlonega with everything he owns on his back. His plan—don’t stop walking for seven years. Wendell embarked of what he’s calling the Earth Expedition, a journey around the world on foot with the purpose of raising awareness for the global water crisis. He plans to cover over 18,000 miles through 14 countries all on foot except for one flight from Canada to Portugal. The first part of the journey will be a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail.

Yeah, probably get only 6.5 years and 17,000 miles into it and wimp out.

If he had real determination he wouldn't be skyblazing it from Canada to Portugal either.

    See, it can be done:

Hopefully he won't complain about a lodging experience and get a bunch of cyber-losers on his back.

You're probably right. He's on a 7 year journey and has the funds for 7 months. Unless this catches the eye of some deep pocketed sponsors, the lack of money will terminate his trip.

Well, Im at almost 9 months with at least 5 months left, maybe I can outdo him if he quits.

Oh, and if any of his 'deep pocket' sponsers read this, call me first.

    Please.

    HAHA!

Although I love it that I can update my journals and take breaks in City to City on this trip, the following is why I hate SOME libraries..lol.

I click on the link provided to read about it and this is what comes up...

I've heard a lot of suspect stuff along the way from some suspect (sounding) folk.
Darren Wendell does not seem one of those types. You should check out his FaceBook page if you're interested. I've messaged back and forth with him a few times and there's nothing there to even raise an eyebrow at. That's what he's about and he's been planning it (and about it) for a long time.
No doubt he is one solid human being.
If you read up on him you'll see.

I don't doubt his good intentions, I'm just not interested in financing someone else's adventure. Besides, I don't know how much his cause will be helped.

His website design can use some improvement. If he wants sponsors, that should be a high priority

My thoughts exactly. Too much crap going on for my tastes.

I always find myself a bit suspicious when some one states they are doing something for a cause. Generally there is an underlying self serving motive. I think there is much that can be done right in our own communities to help fellow bretheren with out "hiking for a cause"

Come to think of it, I think I'll start a hike to raise awareness of middle aged fat men. Mybe I'll call it the but crack tour. Yeah, thats the ticket.

I spotted him up on Springer yesterday (March 9th), so I guess he's on his way. I didn't talk to him though... so I didn't even realize he was starting this huge adventure until reading this thread today.. oh well.

A lot of negativity for someone that is setting out on a journey that sounds pretty tough.

Good Luck Daren, Drop me a line if and when you make it to Thailand.

Just checked out his itinterary, i guess he won't be coming down here to tropical Thailand. probably a good idea. too hot.
    Siberia should be exciting.
I have been playing music here for a lot of Russians in the 5 star resorts as their ruble is so strong now they flock here in droves.

He's going to need a big pile of dollars to get through THAT country!

(Would've liked to see him go through the Pyrenees rather than walking the coast of Spain.) The HRP is an incredible trail!
