My filter was used a few times before the end of my hike last year. I have dryed the filter out and has been setting on a shelf for 6 months. Since the hiker pro has carbon in it is it still good?

I find that once mine has been dry for a bit it will pump gray for a little bit as some of the carbon dust gets pushed out. once it is wet I don't have this problem.
Soak it in clean water for the night
I just pump water through it for a few mins until it runs clear and that seems to work just fine. I honestly don think I would remember to soak it even if I meant to. The number of times when i am getting ready to go that the car is part way out of the driveway and i pull back in to get something I forgot are numerous.
I brought this up because I remember reading somewhere that the carbon filters degrade after you use them and then store it till the next time you use it. I looked on Katadyn web site and could not find the info on the Hiker Pro carbon filter. I am getting the last of my gear and supplys before I leave and my buget for May is tight, so if I can get by without buying a new filter, it would help alot.
There instructions are to allow the filter to completly dry, and then store. Does not say anything about it going bad, with age.
Just run 2 liters of water through it to get out any bottom sitting dry particles. Filter should last until it is dirty.

Enjoy it while it's wild. Soon enough we'll be hiking indoors.
Thank you all for the info.
