Can Opener ?

I'm trying to gauge how good the packaging choices at resupply points near long trails has gotten.

Are foil pouches &/or pop-top cans almost always available, or is carrying a can-opener on long hikes still a good idea ?

Well I always carry one of the GI can openers, might have used it once or twice in all the years of having it: so I think you could get away with not having one; however, mine will stay in my survival kit.

There is probably nothing better designed, more important and less in weight than a P-38 John Wayne can opener. Nowdays there is a slightly larger version and a new mfr. that is making them out of even superior steel. The British version sports a little spoon.

can't say I would bring one -- foil pouches are more popular at small conv. stores. If you had to-a Swiss army knife could punch your way in.

P-38s weight almost nothing, are about as indestructible as anything made, take up no space, cost .40 cents. Why not take one with you.

Or take the slighter larger one, the P-51. I have both and like the 38 better.

I haven't used one on the trail. Only once did I ever want one, and I opened that one with the knife I had. Thanks for the magic Flush2wice!
